NETWORK OPERATING SYSTEMS

I. Learning Competency:
● Set up user access in accordance with Network operating
system features
● Objectives:
o Compare and contrast peer-to-peer network with client-server
network.
o Draw a poster on how network operating systems helps in
makings things possible in times of crisis.
II. Background Information for Learners

Network Operating Systems (NOS)

An Operating System(OS) is a system software

that manages the hardware resources and provides
services to the application software.

A network operating system is an operating

system designed for the sole purpose of supporting
workstations, database sharing, application sharing and
file and printer access sharing among multiple computers
in a network.

Network Operating System runs on a server and gives the server the
capability to manage data, users, groups, security, applications, and other
networking functions.

There are many types of operating systems depending upon its features and
functionalities. They can be Batch Operating System, Multitasking Operating
System, Multiprocessing Operating System, Network Operating System, Hybrid
Operating System, etc. Let’s focus on the Network Operating System or the NOS.

What are example of Network Operating System?

✔ Some examples of network operating systems include:

o Microsoft Windows o Windows Server
Server 2003 2008 R2
o Microsoft Windows o UNIX
Server 2008 o Linux

2
o Mac OS o BSD
o Novell NetWare
What is the function of a Network Operating System?
✔ NOS provides services to clients over a network such as the following
typical network duties:
● Providing access to remote printers
● Enabling and managing access to files on remote systems
● Granting access to remote applications and resources, such as the
Internet
● Providing routing services
● Monitoring the system and security, so as to provide proper security
against viruses, hackers, and data corruption.
● Providing basic network administration utilities

What are the Types Of Network Operating System?

1. Peer-to-peer network 2. Client/Server Network

Client/server network operating systems

In a peer-to-peer network allow the network to centralize functions
operating system users are allowed to and applications in one or more dedicated
share resources and files located on file servers. The file servers become the
their computers and access shared heart of the system, providing access to
resources from others. This system is resources and providing security.
not based with having a file server or Individual workstations (clients) have
centralized management source. A access to the resources available on the
peer-to-peer network sets all file servers. The network operating system
connected computers equal; they all provides the mechanism to integrate all
share the same abilities to use the components of the network and allow
resources available on the network. multiple users to simultaneously share the
same resources irrespective of physical
location.

✔ No server is needed ✔ One powerful computer acting as a

server

✔ All computers have equal ability ✔ Server has the control ability whole
clients don’t

3
✔ Cheaper cabling cost ✔ Higher cabling cost

✔ Normally used in small networks ✔ It is used in small and large networks

✔ Install software to every computer ✔ Install software only in the server while
the clients share the software

✔ Easy to manage ✔ Hard to manage

Advantages and Disadvantages

ADVANTAGES

• Centralized servers are more stable. • Ease of setup

Security is provided through the • Less hardware needed, no
server. server need be acquired
• New technology and hardware can be
easily integrated into the system.
• Hardware and the operating system
can be specialized, with a focus on
performance.
• Servers are able to be accessed
remotely from different locations and
types of systems.
DISADVANTAGES
• Buying and running a server raises • No central location for storage
costs. • Less security than the client–
• Dependence on a central location for server model
operation.
• Requires regular maintenance and
updates.
