Honors Math 2 Final Exam June 19, 2018

* Make sure you write your first and last name on EVERY page.

General directions: Show complete work supporting your answers. Please circle final answers
where appropriate. Note that the diagrams are not necessarily drawn to scale. Any problems that
ask you to “prove” something need to be done as a two column or paragraph proof. Numerical
answers should be exact and in reduced, simplest form when possible. Round to the three places
if necessary.
All work to be graded must be written on this test document. If you need additional space for a
problem continue onto the back. Be sure to indicate that there is something to be graded on the
back of the question.
Timing: This is a 90-minute exam. The exam ends at 1:00 pm. There is no extra time, unless you
have an ed plan (504/IEP) or special circumstances and have previously established this with your
teacher.

Problem format: There are 6 problems weighted equally. A good pace would be to spend 15
minutes on each problem.

Calculators: You may and should use a TI-83/84 calculator for this exam. Calculators may not be
shared between students (no loaning calculators, even if someone has already finished).

Permitted items: pens, pencils, erasers, highlighters, rulers, TI-83/84 calculators, watches that
only tell time.

Prohibited items: any computing or communication device other than a TI-83/84 calculator,
any paper brought by student, any item not listed above as permitted

Good Luck!

1. Consider the function f ( x ) = −4x 2 + 4x + 3

a. Change 𝑓(𝑥) to vertex form. Show algebraic work to support your answer.

b. What is the vertex of 𝑓(𝑥)? ________________________

c. What single transformation could you perform to make 𝑓(𝑥) an even function? Describe the
transformation and write the new equation as g(x).

g(x) = ___________________________________

d. Using g(x) from part c, give a restricted the domain so that the function is one-to-one.

e. Find the equation for g−1 ( x ) consistent with your answer to part d.
!!!!
Note: if you were unable to get an answer to part a (or b), use this function: ℎ(𝑥) = !!!
and find ℎ!! (𝑥)

g−1 ( x ) = _____________________________________

2. An insurance company classifies drivers in three categories: low risk, moderate risk and high risk.
20% of drivers are low risk and 70% of drivers are moderate risk. Some probabilities of having at
least one accident in a year are:

· P(accident|low risk) = 0.02

· P(accident|moderate risk) = 0.05
· P(accident and high risk) = 0.009

For each of these questions you must show work (one way of doing this would be to make a table).
Give your answers accurate to at least 3 decimal places. Here is space for your calculations:

a) Find the probability that a randomly chosen driver is moderate risk and has at least one accident in
a year.

b) Find the probability that a randomly chosen driver does not have an accident in a year.

c) Find the probability that a driver that has had at least one accident in a year is moderate risk.

Final Answers:
