3.1 Linear Independence

The document discusses the concept of linear independence in vector sets, defining linear dependence and independence with specific criteria. It outlines theorems for sets of one or two vectors, as well as conditions for larger sets, including the implications of containing the zero vector. Additional resources for further exploration of the topic are also provided.

Linear Algebra from Elementary to Advanced Course 1: Linear Systems and Matrix Equations

3.1 Linear Independence

Objectives
★ Determine if a given set of vectors is linearly independent.

Definitions
● A set of vectors in is linearly dependent if there exist weights

(not all zero) such that .

● is linearly independent if the equation

has only the trivial solution .

Theorems

Sets of One or Two Vectors

● A set containing only one vector is linearly independent if and only if .
● A set of two vectors is linearly independent if and only if neither vector is a scalar
multiple of the other.

Sets of Two or More Vectors

A set of two or more vectors is linearly dependent if and only if at least one of the
vectors in is a linear combination of the others.

Sets with More Vectors than Entries

If , then the set in must be linearly dependent. That is, if a set contains
more vectors than there are entries in each vector, then the set is linearly dependent.

Sets Containing the Zero Vector

Any set of vectors that contains the zero vector is linearly dependent.
