Session 1: Creating a Basic Word Document
Learning Objective:
Upon the completion of this assignment, students will be able to apply word
processing skills to page, paragraph and text formatting, including:

Assignment 1: Creating Styles and Paragraph Spacing
1. Launch Microsoft Word
2. Open the file named word_creatingstyles
3. Go to Layout tab, set Page Margins as follows: Left 3 cm, Right 2 cm,
Top 2 cm, Bottom 2 cm.
4. Using Multilevel List icon in the Paragraph group on the Home tab
5. Set up Spacing as follows:
- Between the 1st level headings, the space is 24 pt
- Between the 2nd level headings, the space is 12 pt
- For headings of other levels, the space is 6pt
- Line Spacing is 1.5
6. Using Styles group on the Home tab to choose style for each heading.
Headings of different levels should have different styles, i.e. different
fonts, size, color, indent ect.
a. Choose Heading 1 for the 1st level. If you want to modify the
format of this style in terms of font, size, color, ect… then choose
Heading 1, right click, then choose Modify. A dialog box is
opened for changes.

b. Choose Heading 2 for the 2nd level
c. For the other levels, create a new style with your favorite font,
color, size. Expand Styles group, find New Style, then Name it
and set up the format desired.
7. Go to Header & Footer group in the Insert tab, then find Page
Numbers. Choose Bottom of Page, then Bold Numbers 2 as the format.
8. Click Close header and footer icon to return to the document.
9. Save the document.
Assignment 2: Using Tab Setting
1. Launch Microsoft Word
2. Open the file named word_tabsetting
3. Type vegetable names and their prices. Do NOT type ……..!
4. Expand Paragraph group arrow, next choose Indents and Spacing tab,
then Tabs.
5. Set Tab stop position 6”, Right Alignment, Leader ……
6. Put the mouse before prices and press Tab on the keyboard.
7. Save the document.
Assignment 3: Inserting Bullets and Numbering
1. Open the file named word_bulletsnumbering
2. Choose font COOPER BLACK for the title.
3. Choose different Styles for the 3 benefit groups.
4. Use Bullets and Numbering to differentiate the mentioned benefits.
5. Save the document.
Assignment 4: Integrating Page Number into Header or Footer
1. Open the file named word_pagenumberfooter
2. Go to Header & Footer group, choose Footer, choose Edit Footer, find
Quick Parts, then click on Field to insert a set of information you want to
appear in the file.
3. Choose to insert Author – here type your full name, Page, and Save Date.
4. Click OK to save your changes and go back to the document footer. Then
Close header and footer to return to the document.
5. Apply other formatting tools to make the text have a better layout.
6. Save the document.

Assignment 5: Creating Header & Footer
1. Open the file named word_headerfooter
2. From the Insert tab, click on Header and then Edit Header from the
Header & Footer group.
3. Type Walrus Associate Proposal under the following format: Right
Alignment, font size 10 pt Italic.
4. Add a bottom border by using Border icon.
5. Double click on the header to return to the document.
6. Go to Insert tab, choose Page Number, then click on Accent Bar 4 as
the page numbering style.
7. Click on Close header and footer to return to the document.
8. Put the cursor before the title “Proposal”, go to Layout tab, click on
Breaks, then choose Next Page.
9. Return to the blank page.
10. Put the text “Proposal” under the following format: Font COOPER
BLACK, size 72, center alignment.
11. Go to Paragraph group, choose Borders icon, click on outside borders.
12. Save the document.
Assignment 6: Inserting a Complex Footer
1. Open the file named word_complexfooter
2. Place your cursor somewhere on the 1st page
3. Go to Insert tab, find Headers and Footers, choose Edit Footer
4. Type “Confidential”. Format the words as follows: size 18, in red, bold,
center alignment.
5. Close Header and Footer.
6. Go to the last page. Put your cursor somewhere on that page. Go to Insert
tab, then Edit Footer
7. Click Link to Previous to turn it off. Next, delete the current text. Instead
type “Not to be released”. Format the words as follows: size 18, in dark
blue, bold, center alignment.
8. Close Header and Footer icon.
9. Save the document.

Assignment 1: Creating and Formatting a Table
1. Open the file name word_tableformatting
2. Type the text: Below is a table summarizing the information
3. Go to the next line and insert a table with the following steps:
a. Go to Insert tab, then choose Table
b. Drag down 6 rows and across 5 columns. Click to create a table.
c. In the top row, from the left, the 1st column is for Options, 2nd
Advantages, 3rd Disadvantages, 4th Who Else Used and 5th
Outcome.
d. Collect key point to fill in the table
e. Format the top row with bold, size 16
f. Highlight the top row. Expand Paragraph group, find Borders
icon, then choose Borders and Shading, apply Style number 7
(double line =). Click OK to return to the document.
g. Choose the entire table.
h. Right click and choose Table Properties from the menu

i. Choose Row tab in the dialog box
j. Uncheck Allow row to break across pages
k. Check Repeat as header row at the top of each page
l. Click OK to close the dialog box and return to the document.
m. Select the 5st column, right click, find Insert, choose Insert
Columns to the Right.
n. Select the top row, right click, find Insert, choose Insert Rows

o. In the 1st column, select 2 cells from the top, right click, choose
Merge Cells. In this cell, once again right click, find Cell
Alignment, choose Vertical Centre.
p. Do similarly for the remained columns.
4. Save the document.
Assignment 2: Converting text to table
1. Get the file named word_texttotable
2. Select the text starting with Dues and Subscriptions and ending with
$9729
3. On the Insert tab, click on the options button below the Table icon.
4. Click on Covert Text to Table.
a. Number of Columns should be set to 2
b. Fixed Column Width should be Auto
c. Separate text at: Tabs and click OK
5. Save the document.
Assignment 3: Inserting and Resizing a Picture and Adding a Caption
1. Open a blank page
2. On the Insert tab, click Picture
3. Choose any picture available in your computer to insert
4. Click on the picture, next drag a handle toward the center of the picture
until it is as small as expected.
5. Right click on the picture, select Insert Caption
6. In the Caption text box, type a name for the picture. Click OK
7. If the caption appears above the picture, select the caption and drag it
below the picture.
8. Save the document.

1. Open the file named word_picturewrapping
2. Place the insertion point at the end of the first paragraph on the second
page, which ends with “for I know where I am”
3. Press Enter to create a new paragraph
4. On the Insert tab, click Picture
5. Choose any picture available in your computer
6. Click on the picture, next drag a handle toward the center of the picture
until it is as small as expected.
7. Right click on the picture, choose Text Wrapping, then Top and Bottom
8. Change Text Wrapping from Top and Bottom to In Line With Text.
See how the document changes.
9. Save the document.
Assignment 5: Creating and Editing a Textbox
1. Open a blank document
2. Go to Insert tab, find Text Box, then Draw Text Box
3. Enter the text “Fighting for the course” in the text box
4. Drag the handle on the right side of the box toward the center to make the
box smaller
5. Select the text box. A Format tab appears. In the Shape Styles group,
choose one of the boxes in the gallery.
6. You can change box color or box outline by choosing Shape Fill, Shape
Outline
7. Copy the text box. Then paste the box somewhere else in the page.
8. Move the new text box to the center of the page. Next format the box so
that it has different format from the 1st box.
9. Save the document.
Assignment 6: Compressing a Picture
1. Reopen the file you have just saved.
2. Click on the picture, Format tab appears. Find Compress Pictures
3. Click OK and save the document
