The document is a problem sheet for a Mathematical Methods in Physics-II course at Jagannath University, focusing on functions of a complex variable. It includes various problems related to harmonic functions, analytic functions, Cauchy-Riemann equations, residues, and integral evaluations. The problems require proving properties of complex functions and calculating specific integrals and residues.

Functions of a complex variable
1. (a) Prove that, 𝑢 = 𝑒 −𝑥 (𝑥𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑦 − 𝑦𝑐𝑜𝑠𝑦) is harmonic and find 𝑣 such that 𝑓(𝑧) = 𝑢 + 𝑖𝑣 is analytic. Hence Find 𝑓(𝑧). (b) Prove that, 𝑢 = 𝑥 2 − 𝑦 2 is harmonic and find 𝑣 such that 𝑓(𝑧) = 𝑢 + 𝑖𝑣 is analytic. Hence Find 𝑓(𝑧). (c) Given that, 𝑢 = 𝑥 2 − 𝑦 2 + 2𝑥, find the conjugate function v(x,y) such that 𝑓(𝑧) = 𝑢 + 𝑖𝑣 is an analytic function of z throughout the z plane. (d) Verify that the real and imaginary parts of the following function satisfy the Cauchy- Riemann equations and thus deduce the analyticity of the equation 𝑓(𝑧) = 𝑠𝑖𝑛2𝑧. (e) Verify that the exponential function 𝑓(𝑧) = 𝑒 𝛼𝑧 , where, α is a constant, satisfies the Cauchy Riemann equations and show that 𝑓´(𝑧) = 𝛼𝑒 𝛼𝑧 .
2. Prove that (i) ∮𝑐 𝑑𝑧 = 0 (ii) ∮𝑐 𝑧𝑑𝑧 = 0 (iii) ∮𝑐 (𝑧 − 𝑧𝑜 ) 𝑑𝑧 = 0 where, c is any
simple closed curve and zo is a constant. 𝑧 3. Show that 𝑓(𝑧) = 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑧 has a removable singularity at 𝑧 = 0.
4. (a) Find the residues of the following:
(𝑧−2) (1+𝑐𝑜𝑠𝑧) (𝑧+2) (i) 𝑓(𝑧) = 𝑧 2(𝑧−1)2 (ii) 𝑓(𝑧) = (𝑧−𝜋)3 (iii) 𝑓(𝑧) = (𝑧 2+9)(𝑧 2+1) (b) Find the residue of 𝑧2 at z = ia 𝑧 2 +𝑎2
