SV312 Report

The document outlines the procedure followed by a group to create an interactive web map of the University of Zimbabwe Main Campus over two weeks in March 2022. The group, consisting of four members, sourced an orthophoto and digitized key features such as roads and buildings using QGIS and Postgis. The final product was an interactive web map that allowed users to toggle layers and zoom in and out.

TITLE: PROCEDURE GROUP 5 FOLLOWED IN CREATING AN INTERACTIVE WEB

MAP OF THE UZ MAIN CAMPUS.
TO: S. TOGAREPI
The task to produce an interactive web map of the University of Zimbabwe Main Campus
was carried out in a space of about two weeks from the 22 st- 31st of March 2022. The group
members were Kelvin Kanene, Mark Musandirire, Daniel Rabvemhiri and Amos Mapanga.
Work commenced on the very same day the task was given by sourcing an orthophoto of the
University of Zimbabwe from the Department of Geomatics Engineering.
Each group member obtained the orthophoto and thereafter the group teamed up to agree on
features to digitize on the orthophoto. Heads up digitizing was done. Roads, buildings, car
parks, sports facilities and bus stops were identified as the features to digitize. The group
delegated features to digitize with Kanene leading the group. Initially, I set the coordinate
system in QGIS for the orthophoto and the road shapefile l subsequently created to
Arc1950/UTM Zone 36S as pointed out in the task outline. I digitized the entire road network
to the west of the UZ Drive After digitizing the roads as polylines, l added fields in the roads
attribute table which were road type, name as well as length and then populated the fields
with data.
The group used Postgis to create the spatial database. Using the Shapefile and DBF Exporter
Loader the group imported all the shapefiles combined to our Postgis database. After
successfully importing the shapefiles and refreshing the individual datasets for the extracted
features were stored separately in the database. The group made use of the QGIS to web
plugin to create the web map. After setting the parameters in the OpenLayers on the plugin,
the interactive web map was displayed in which layers could be turned on and off, allowing
the zoom in or out functionality as well.
