RECALL:
- definition of function, relation, domain and range
- evaluating algebraic equations
- operations on integers and fractions
B. Introduction
D. Development Definition: A relation is a rule that relates values from a set
of values (called the
domain) to a second set of values (called the range).
A relation is a set of ordered pairs (x,y).
Definition: A function is a relation where each element in the
domain is related to
only one value in the range by some rule.
A function is a set of ordered pairs (x,y) such that no two
ordered pairs have the
same x-value but different y-values. Using functional notation,
we can write f(x) = y,
read as “f of x is equal to y.” In particular, if (1, 2) is an
ordered pair associated with
the function f, then we say that f(2) = 1

Evaluating a function means replacing the variable in the

function, in this case
x, with a value from the function's domain and computing for
the result. To
denote that we are evaluating f at a for some a in the domain
of f, we write f(a)
F. Engagement

H. Assimilation *Evaluating function is the process of

___________________________ of the function at the
_________________ assigned to a given variable. Just like in
evaluating algebraic expressions, you just need to
________________________________ in the expression with the
assigned value, then _________________________________ in the
expression using the correct order of operations. Don’t forget
to _______________________ your answer.
*The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has
created a global health crisis that has had a deep impact on
the way we perceive our world and our everyday lives,
(https://www.frontiersin.org).Philippines, one of the high-risk
countries of this pandemic has recorded high cases of the
disease. As a student, you realize that Mathematics can be a
tool to better assess the situation and formulate strategic plan
to control the disease.
Suppose that in a certain part of the country, the following

data have been recorded.

𝐼𝐼(𝑑 ) 3 5 9 12 18 25 35 47 82
Where I(d) is the function of the number of people who got
infected in d days
V. REFLECTION The learners, in their notebook, journal or portfolio will write
their personal insight about the lesson using prompts below.
