Digital Literacy

Navigating the Digital World

Agenda

At the end of the discussion, students should be able to:

● Define Digital Literacy

● Familiarize themselves with basic computer terminologies
● Know different types of Operating systems and softwares
Digital Literacy

Digital literacy refers to the ability to understand, evaluate,

and utilize digital technologies, including the internet,
software applications, and electronic devices, in order to
effectively navigate, communicate, and access information
in the digital age.
What is a Computer??

A computer is an electronic device that processes data and performs

various tasks. It consists of two primary categories of components:
hardware and software.
Computer Hardware

The physical component of a

computer.
Central Processing Unit (CPU):
Often referred to as the computer's
"brain," the CPU executes
instructions and performs
calculations.
Computer Hardware

Memory (RAM - Random Access

Memory): RAM provides temporary
storage for data and instructions that
the CPU is currently using.
Computer Hardware
Hard Drive (HDD) and Solid-State Drive (SSD): These storage devices
are used to store files and software, with SSDs being faster and more
reliable than HDDs. HDD is electromechanical while SSD uses DRAM in
terms of accessing data.
Computer Hardware

Input Devices: Components we use to interact with computers.

Computer Hardware

Output Devices: Components we use to interact with computers.

Computer Hardware

Motherboard: The main circuit board of a computer that connects all

hardware components.
Computer Software

Software refers to the programs and applications that run on a computer.

These components include:
Operating System (OS): Software that manages computer hardware
resources and provides a user interface for interacting with the computer.
Computer Software

Applications (Software Programs): are the programs we install in our

computers to do tasks or play games
Computer Software

Utilities: Software tools that help manage and maintain the computer, such
as antivirus programs, disk cleanup tools, and backup software.
Computer Software

Web Services: Online platforms and services accessed through web

browsers, such as Google Docs, Gmail, and social media sites.
Computer Software

Programming Languages: Tools used by developers to create software

applications.
Computer Software

Firmware: Permanent software programmed into hardware devices, like

BIOS in a computer's motherboard. Firmware serves as the operational
system that interacts between the hardware components and the software
applications. It is responsible for making sure the device runs correctly,
providing the necessary functionality, and responding to the user’s
commands.
