General Course Information

Course Aims
This course aims at introducing various types of virtual
reality techniques and their applications. The course will
first cover some basic VR technologies, including
interfacing devices, CG techniques, and interaction
techniques. It will then introduce some VR applications,
including medical applications and games. It will also
cover the design issues of virtual reality systems.
Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOs)
 Identify the important characteristics of different virtual
reality techniques.
 Explain different types of virtual reality hardware systems.
 Explain and discuss different types of virtual reality
applications.
 Design and apply virtual reality techniques to address real-
world problems.
Course Assessment

Course Work – 50%

Quiz – 20%
Course Project – 30%

Examination – 50%
This course is a multi-disciplinary course. It covers
diverse disciplines, including computer science,
biology, physics, electronics, and mechanics.

Due to such a broad coverage of topics, some of the

knowledge can be difficult to you, as well as to me.
Nevertheless, it would be good to include them as
they provide some background knowledge to some
VR/AR applications.
The course project involves developing a VR or AR
application. The development will be based on the
Unreal Engine 5.

This course project contributes to 30% of the final

mark. It requires a certain amount of programming
efforts. You need to prepare for, if you take this course.

CS runs a programming clinic to help students with

programming problems:
https://courses.cs.cityu.edu.hk/clinic
For the course project, the department requires
that students in CS4188 must achieve at least 30%
(out of 100%) of the course project component in
order to get a passing grade in this course.

For the examination, the university requires that

each student must achieve at least 30% (out of
100%) of the examination component in order to get
a passing grade in this course.
For this course not to be so boring, I have put a
lot of effort trying to include more relevant or
interesting images/videos to demonstrate the
ideas/devices.

However, some of the technologies or devices

may not come with nice videos. So, you may
see some low-quality videos occasionally, but
most should be of reasonably high quality.
