Quarter 3- Module 3
Angles Formed by Parallel Lines
Cut by a Transversal Using
Measurement
Introductory Message

This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, dear learners, can continue your
studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions,
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-step as you
discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM.
This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you need to ask
your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the
lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check your
learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that
you will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teachers are also provided to
our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can best
help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of
this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercise and tests. Read the
instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the tasks
in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.

Thank you.

What’s In
Recall this lesson…
The special pairs of angles are:
• Complementary angles are two angles whose sum of measure is 90˚.
• Supplementary angles are pair of angles whose sum of measure is 180˚.
• Adjacent angles are pair of angles with a common side and a common vertex.
• Vertical angles refer to a pair of non- adjacent angles with a common vertex, and whose
sides form two pairs of opposite rays.
• Perpendicular lines are two lines if they form right angles.

What’s New
If you look around, you will see and discover more things. In our wonderful home, we can
see things that makes us amaze on how things are made and built. The pictures below are drawn
using parallel lines and transversal.

Look at the pictures below. Answer the following questions. Then write your answer on a
separate sheet of paper.

• Can you name all the pictures?

• What other things you can give that show parallel lines and transversal?
• What do you observe about the lines?

4
• How can you define parallel lines and transversal?
• What is the importance of parallel line cut by a transversal in your life?
• Can you draw your own dream house using parallel lines cut by a transversal?

What Is It
In the previous activity, parallel lines and transversal are presented in the figures. To gain
more knowledge for the next lesson, you will study about angles formed by parallel lines cut by a
transversal using measurement.

Figure 1
Parallel lines are two lines with the same distance apart and do not intersect.

A transversal is a line that intersects two or more coplanar lines at different points. In the figure
above, line EF is a transversal or in symbol, EF.

Based on the above figure, the angles formed by the interior angles are ∠3, ∠4, ∠5, ∠6 and the
exterior angles are ∠1, ∠2, ∠7, ∠8.

transversal. In the above figure, ∠3 ≅ ∠6 ; and ∠4 ≅ ∠5 are alternate interior angles.

• Alternate interior angles are two non- adjacent interior angles on the opposite sides of the

transversal. In the above figure, ∠1 ≅ ∠8 ; and ∠2 ≅ ∠7 are alternate exterior angles.

• Alternate exterior angles are two non- adjacent interior angles on the opposite sides of the

transversal. In the above figure,∠1 ≅ ∠5, ∠2 ≅ ∠6, ∠3 ≅ ∠7, and ∠4 ≅ ∠8 are

• Corresponding angles are two angles in corresponding positions on the same side of the

corresponding angle.

Properties of Parallel Lines Cut by a Transversal

A. If two parallel lines are cut by a transversal, then each

pair of corresponding angles are congruent.

In the figure below, ∠1 and ∠5 are corresponding angles. Since they are corresponding
angles, then their measures are equal and congruent.

83˚ 1
83˚ 5

B. If two parallel lines are cut by a transversal, then each pair

of alternate- interior angles are congruent.

In the figure below, ∠4 and ∠5 are alternate- interior angles and alternate- interior angles are
congruent, then ∠4 and ∠5 are congruent.

4 79˚
79˚ 5

C. If two parallel lines are cut by a transversal, then each pair

of alternate- exterior angles are congruent.

In the figure below, ∠1 and ∠8 are alternate exterior angles. Since they are alternate-
exterior angles, then their measures are equal and congruent.

75˚ 1

8 75˚

D. If two parallel lines are cut by a transversal, then each pair of interior
angles on the same side of transversal are supplementary.

In the figure below, ∠3 and ∠5 are pair of interior angles on the same side of transversal. Since
the pair of angles are supplementary, then the m∠3 + m∠5 is equal to 180˚.

E. If two parallel lines are cut by a transversal, then each pair of exterior
angles on the same side of transversalare supplementary.

In the figure below, ∠1 and ∠7 are pair of interior angles on the same side of transversal. Since
the pair of angles are supplementary, then the m∠1 + m∠7 is equal to 180˚.
