III. Answer the following questions 𝟖 × 𝟐 = 𝟏𝟔

17. Prove that 𝟑 + √𝟓 is an irrational number.

Ans : Let us assume to the contrary that 3 + √5 is rational.

𝑝
3 + √5 = , 𝑝 and 𝑞 are coprime, 𝑞 ≠ 0
𝑞

𝑝
√5 = 𝑞 − 3

𝑝−3𝑞
√5 = 𝑞

But this contradicts the fact that √5 is irrational.

Our assumption that 3 + √5 is rational is incorrect.

∴ 𝟑 + √𝟓 is irrational

Ans : Every composite number can be expressed (factorised) as a product of

primes, and this factorisation is unique, apart from the order in which the prime

factors occur.

Composite number = 3 × 7 = 21

36. Prove that “If in two triangles, corresponding angles are equal, then their
corresponding sides are in the same ratio ( or in proportion ) and hence the
two triangles are similar”.
Ans :

Data : In ∆𝐴𝐵𝐶 and ∆𝐷𝐸𝐹

∠𝐴 = ∠𝐷
∠𝐵 = ∠𝐸
∠𝐶 = ∠𝐹
𝐴𝐵 𝐵𝐶 𝐴𝐶
To Prove : 𝐷𝐸 = 𝐸𝐹 = 𝐷𝐹

Construction : Cut 𝐷𝑃 = 𝐴𝐵 and 𝐷𝑄 = 𝐴𝐶 and join 𝑃𝑄

Proof : In ∆𝐴𝐵𝐶 and ∆𝐷𝑃𝑄
𝐴𝐵 = 𝐷𝑃 [∵ Consruction ]
∠𝐴 = ∠𝐷 [∵ Data ]
𝐴𝐶 = 𝐷𝑄 [∵ Consruction ]
∴ ∆𝐴𝐵𝐶 ≅ ∆𝐷𝑃𝑄 [∵ S.A.S postulate ]
∴ 𝐵𝐶 = 𝑃𝑄
∠𝐴𝐵𝐶 = ∠𝐷𝑃𝑄 [∵ CPCT ]
But , ∠𝐴𝐵𝐶 = ∠𝐷𝐸𝐹 [∵ Data ]
∴ ∠𝐷𝑃𝑄 = ∠𝐷𝐸𝐹
∴ 𝑃𝑄 ∥ 𝐸𝐹 [ ∴ ∠𝐷𝑃𝑄 and ∠𝐷𝐸𝐹 Corresponding angles ]
𝐷𝑃 𝑃𝑄 𝐷𝑄
𝐷𝐸
= 𝐸𝐹
= 𝐷𝐹
𝐴𝐵 𝐵𝐶 𝐴𝐶
∴ = 𝐸𝐹 = 𝐷𝐹 [∵ Construction and C.B.P.T ]

37. A wooden article was made by scooping out a hemisphere from each end of a
solid cylinder, as shown in the figure. If the height of the cylinder is 𝟏𝟎 𝒄𝒎,
and the radius of its base is 𝟑. 𝟓 𝒄𝒎, then find the total surface area of the
article.
Ans :
Total surface area of the article

A juice seller was serving his customers using glass as shown in the figure.
The inner diameter of the cylindrical glass was 𝟓 𝒄𝒎, but the bottom of the
glass had a hemispherical raised portion which reduced the capacity of the
glass. If the height of the glass was 𝟏𝟎 𝒄𝒎, then find the apparent capacity
of the glass and its actual capacity. ( 𝑻𝒂𝒌𝒆 𝝅 = 𝟑. 𝟏𝟒 )
Ans : Apparent capacity of the glass

elevation of the top of the tower from a point 𝑷 on the same ground and
from the foot of the tower 𝑸𝑹 are 𝟑𝟎° as shown in the figure. If 𝑷𝑸 = 𝟐𝟒 𝒎
