POST – MID ASSIGNMENT (FALL 2018)
Semester 3 (2017 – 21)

Q. 1 A continuous random variable x that can assume values between x = 1 and x = 4 has a
1
density function f(x) = 3.
(i) Show that the area under the curve equal to 1. (ii) Find P(1.5 < x < 3)
Q. 2 A continuous random variable X having values only between x = 0 and x = 4 has a density
function given by

1
f  x =  ax ; where “a” is a constant.
2
Find (i) a (ii) P(1 < X < 2) (iii) P(2.25 < X < 3.5)

Q. 3 If X is a continuous r.v. with p.d.f. f(x) = kx2, 0 < x < 1, determine the value of k and find
1 1
probability that <X< .

Q. 4 If 20% of the bolts produced by a machine are defective, determine the probability that out
of 4 bolts chosen at random (i) 0 (ii) 2 are defective.

Q. 5 In a binomial distribution with n = 5, what is the value of other parameter of the

binomial, if P(X = 0) = P(X = 1). Find its mean and variance.

Q. 6 If X is binomially distributed with n = 10 and p = 0.4 then find mean and variance of
X 10
Y= .

Q. 7 Find the probability for each:

(i) P(0 < z < 2.32) (ii) P(z < 1.65) (iii) P(z > 19.1)
Q. 8 Each month, an American household generate and average of 28 pounds of newspaper for
garbage or recycling. Assuming the standard deviation is 2 pounds. If household is selected
at random, find the probability of its generating: (i) Less than 25 pounds per month (ii)
Between 27 and 31 pounds per month (iii) More than 30.2 pounds per month (iv) Between
20.5 and 25.2 pounds per month
