Introduction to Management Initial Skills Assessment

Part 1: Skill Inventory

Conceptual Skills

- I feel like this is a harder skill to define because it feels like something I
do on a nearly daily basis. One problem I have to continuously solve is
that of my schedule. This is something that used to get so out of hand
for me. I’d miss deadlines for class, forget tasks that I’d want to do for
soccer or theater, and overall just be in a state of disarray. This year,
I’ve made it a priority to stay ahead of my schedule, so that I can
alleviate present and future stress. I utilize google calendar a lot, but I
also have a physical planner where I write down what I’d like to get
done in the week, then break it down to daily tasks, and in this way I
am able to create a structure that keeps me busy, on task, and feeling
productive and good, while still balancing some leisure and recovery
time.

Interpersonal/Human Skills

- Also last year, I took CIS101 fully online, with group work being
something that was a part of our weekly presentations. It very easily
could have gone off the rails, but very early on I placed myself in a
leadership role, delegating tasks on our weekly powerpoints and just
telling each individual to work on whatever I assigned. We worked
really well together and never turned assignments in late, and
whenever someone needed extra support, we were able to figure out
what needed to get done and pick up their slack. I was worried about
the workload in that class – none of it was extremely difficult, but it
very easily could’ve gotten out of hand if we didn’t get our assigned
tasks done. I was quite proud of how we worked together in this class. I
am very confident that if I hadn’t made it a priority to delegate tasks
that we would not have had the success we had in the course as a
group.

Technical Skills
I am a theater major with a business minor.

- In my field of study, budgeting is a vital skill. Knowing how to spend

money effectively and adapt to problems around money is something
that a good theatre manager should know how to do.
- Software is something I’ve not really worked with as much. I think
learning to use certain software like Canva and stuff more to help me
work on advertising for social media and things may be helpful.

Part 2: Case Study

Local bakery experiencing a decline in sales, owner believes it’s due to

increased competition and outdated marketing strategies. I am a
management consultant hired to assess the situation and recommend
solutions.

Analysis

- As the owner pointed out, increased competition very well may be a

factor in declining sales. Along with this factor, perhaps there are
innovations that other bakeries are implementing that this local bakery
may not be implementing, so almost a technology decline or
stagnation that the bakery is failing to keep up with. Outdated
marketing strategies also seem to be a problem the owner specifically
pointed out, so there are plenty of things to try to improve. Also, with
sales declining, perhaps there is room to implement some new pricing
strategies to encourage more sales from potential customers.

Two specific recommendations for improvement

- First, I think advertising would be a great thing to try to improve sales,

but having some sort of specific promotion to advertise would be
important. Perhaps showcasing a new baked good, or highlighting a
classic. Either way, pick the product to be the glamour piece that
draws customers, and create some sort of promotion to try to boost
sales. Hiring someone to make a poster that you can promote on social
media, and maybe even partnering with certain influencers to
encourage customers to visit the bakery.
- Another thing to potentially consider is assessing current staff
members and seeing specific qualities that certain members can either
improve or be placed in other positions to highlight those more. Is a
dishwasher actually a really good people person? Maybe they should
try their hand at working the sales side some more. Is there a front end
sales person who really is not the best at encouraging sales? Maybe
they need to be laid off. Are there just too many employees getting in
each other’s way? Maybe switch some shifts around. Maybe there are
certain hours that employees are understaffed. Basically, assess the
workforce in a holistic way to get the most out of your people.

Which skills would be most important for implementing these changes? Why?

- First, technical skills, for the advertising piece specifically.

- Second, interpersonal and conceptual skills

Part 3: Reflection

What are my strengths and weaknesses in terms of management skills?

One specific area I’d like to develop further

- My technical skills. I think these are things that I simply haven’t given
the time to develop, so engaging in classes or workshops on
budgeting, financing, and other technical skills could be helpful. Also
getting an internship may help these areas to get some real hands on
experience.

How can I leverage my existing strengths to enhance my overall

management potential?

- I know that my technical skills for certain areas may not be as strong,
but I feel that my conceptual skills could be leveraged to make this up
by hiring others who can fill in my technical skill gaps.
