LECTURE METHOD OF INSRUCTION IN AGRICULTURE EDUCATION AND EXTENSION.
Introduction.
The lecture method a traditional method to teaching originating from oral traditions it has
involved into a structured educational practice widely used in various academic settings.
Emphasizes teacher’s role as primary source of knowledge.
Traces its roots from the Herodotus and the griots of west Africa emphasizing importance of
knowledge dissemination.
The term lecture derives from Latin “lectors” meaning to read reflecting its origin from reading
aloud to audience.
A lecture method therefore describes along talk given to a particular group of people on
particular subject or topic this, therefore implies that a lecture is a monologue, presentation or
discussion that is largely dominated by one individual who in this case you as teacher.

TYES OF LECTURES
Formal lecture_ The teacher delivers content, often using presentations nor notes while
students passively receive information
Assessments includes formal evaluation like exams or assignment to gauge the understanding
It occurs in classrooms with a set curriculum and defined objectives
Examples; e-learning course and in person class instruction.
2. Informal lecture -The learning process is flexible and the learners are left to peruse topics of
interest independently or collaboratively
It encourages students’ participation discussions and feedback
It is unstructured.
COMPONENTS OF LECTURE METHOD
These are factors or ingredients that combines to form the lecture method as awhile
 Teacher. In this case4 is the instructor or the facilitator
 Explicit curriculum- Which lays objective and guidelines to follow
 Aim of the lesson – whatever the teacher needs and has ton achieve
 Class of individuals
 Holistic environment- a place that encompasses the lecture process
 Educational activities

 Results or the expected learning outcomes _ The feedback the teacher gets after the
actual instruction.

Characteristics of lecture method

1. One way communication- The instructor is the primary source of information delivering
content as learners listen pensively and take notes
2. Perceive learning – Students typically listen and take notes, with limited interaction or
engagement during the lecture
3. Structured format-Lectures are typically organized with a lesson introduction, body and
conclusion allowing for logical progression of ideas
4. Teacher centered- The instructor is the primary source of knowledge, controlling the
flow of information.
5. Efficient for large groups it allows the teacher to cover a large amount of material in a
relatively short time making it suitable for large classes
6. Focus on theoretical knowledge- It is more suited for delivering obstruct or conceptual
knowledge rather than hands-on- skills
Advantages of lecture method
I. It is cheap- Because it makes some summarized knowledge from many sources available
to learners through a specialist who in this case is at teacher
II. Large number of learners may be reached at a time – hence its economical in time and
space
III. It is a quick method- may help cover a larger volume of information within a short time
in comparison with other methods of teaching.
IV. It is most useful for a theory lesson_ if the material is presented in a logical sequence.
.
The lecture method has a number of limitations, which militate against its use for teaching
Agriculture in Secondary schools
I. Lack of frequent feedback from learners. Misunderstandings and inaccuracies are,
therefore, never corrected
II. Learners are fairly passive ; they are not actively because a teacher does most of the
talking. In many cases, learners need considerable background knowledge to enable
them follow and understand a lecture
III. Cross referencing. Transfer of ideas from one subject to another is not achieved
IV. Learners tend to rely solely on the lecture note to the exclusion of other sources of
getting information

V. Development of scientific skills is neglected. In most cases skills like observation,
Measurement, Classification, Analyzation skills are often omitted
When to use lecture method
I. When introducing a new topic. It is effective for introducing broad or complex topic for the
information to be conveyed efficiently
II. When doing clarification. This is for the topics that requires clear, step-by step explanation
III. When the material to be taught are not readily available.
IV. Expert sharing knowledge. When a subject matter expert is delivering specialized
knowledge. It ensures student grasp important concept from a reliable source.
Improving the lecture method
I. Making it informal by having some class discussion
II. Re-organizing the physical arrangement in the classroom. The organization of learners in
the classroom for an informal lecture should be such that learners are in both eye and
voice contact
III. Using of an appropriate language that is use precise language
IV. Mastering the technique of speaking. You should speak slowly; articulate your word
clearly and intelligibly.
V. Aiding learners in note taking. Advising learners to take notes during lecture classes.
VI. Use of visual aids such as slide and diagrams to enhance understanding and retention
VII. Giving learners assignments. this provides them with anchoring knowledge which would
enable them to effectively follow a lecture.
Note; Lecture method has been criticized for its one directional nature. It continues to adapt,
integrating new technologies and pedagogical strategies to enhance student engagement and
learning.
