INTRODUCTION
Library automation software has revolutionized the way libraries operate, transforming them
from traditional, manual systems into efficient, technology-driven hubs of information. The
primary purpose of library automation is to streamline various library operations, such as
cataloging, circulation, acquisition, and inventory management, through the use of integrated
software systems. This not only enhances the efficiency of library staff but also improves the
overall user experience for patrons.
The concept of library automation dates back to the 1960s when computers were first used to
generate and print indices for scientific and technical literature. Over the decades, the technology
has evolved significantly, leading to the development of sophisticated library management
systems (LMS) that can handle a wide range of tasks. Modern LMS packages come with various
modules and sub-modules designed to manage different aspects of library operations. These
include cataloging, which involves creating and maintaining bibliographic records; circulation,
which tracks the lending and returning of materials; acquisition, which manages the procurement
of new materials; and serial control, which handles the management of periodicals and journals.
One of the key advantages of library automation is the reduction of repetitive manual tasks, which
saves time and labor for both library staff and users. For instance, automated cataloging systems
can quickly generate bibliographic records, reducing the time required for manual data entry.
Similarly, automated circulation systems can efficiently track the borrowing and returning of
materials, minimizing errors and ensuring accurate record-keeping Library Automation: An

Library automation also facilitates better resource sharing and collaboration among libraries.
With standardized protocols and formats, such as MARC (Machine-Readable Cataloging) and
Z39.50, libraries can easily share bibliographic records and other information with one another.
This interoperability allows libraries to expand their collections and provide users with access to
a broader range of resources. Additionally, automated systems can support interlibrary loan
services, enabling users to borrow materials from other libraries within a network.
In conclusion, library automation software has transformed the way libraries function, making
them more efficient, accessible, and user-friendly. By automating various tasks and processes,
libraries can save time and labor, improve the accuracy of their records, and provide users with

CHAPTER 6
Implementing Easylib.net can involve significant initial costs, particularly for smaller libraries
with limited budgets. These costs include purchasing the software, setting up the necessary
hardware, and possibly upgrading existing infrastructure to support the new system. Additionally,
there may be costs associated with migrating data from old systems to Easylib.net, as well as any
customization required to tailor the platform to the library’s specific needs. While these initial
investments can be substantial, they are often offset by the long-term benefits of improved
efficiency and reduced manual labor.
2. Training Requirements:
To fully utilize all the features of Easylib.net, library staff may need extensive training. This
training can be time-consuming and may require additional resources, such as hiring trainers or
dedicating staff time to learning the new system. Training is essential to ensure that staff can
effectively use the platform’s various modules, such as cataloguing, circulation, and digital
library management. Without proper training, staff may struggle to navigate the system, leading
to inefficiencies and potential errors in library operations.
3. Dependence on Internet:
As a web-based platform, Easylib.net requires a stable internet connection to function properly.
Any disruptions in internet service can affect access to library resources, potentially causing
inconvenience for both staff and patrons. This dependence on the internet means that libraries
must ensure they have reliable and high-speed internet connections. In areas with unstable or
slow internet, this can be a significant drawback, as it may hinder the library’s ability to provide
seamless access to its resources.
4. Customization Limitations:
While Easylib.net offers a wide range of features, some libraries may find that it lacks specific
customizations tailored to their unique needs. For example, special libraries with unique
collections or specific workflows may require custom features that are not available in the
standard version of Easylib.net. In such cases, libraries may need to work with the Easylib team
to develop custom solutions, which can be time-consuming and costly. This limitation can be a
barrier for libraries that require highly specialized functionality.
Library Automation Software SE&PM(BCS501)
In summary, while Easylib.net offers numerous benefits for library automation and management,
there are also challenges associated with its implementation and maintenance. These include
significant initial setup costs, the need for extensive staff training, dependence on a stable internet
connection, customization limitations, and the requirement for regular maintenance and updates.
Libraries must carefully consider these factors when deciding to implement Easylib.net to ensure
that they can fully leverage its capabilities while managing the associated challenges.
