TUTORIAL – 02: Velocity & Acceleration Analysis, Cam & Followers and Gears
Date: 13 Feb. 2025

Motion of the equilateral triangular plate ABC in its plane is controlled by the hydraulic cylinder D.
If the piston rod in the cylinder is moving upward at the constant rate of 0.3 m/s during an interval
of its motion, calculate for the instant when θ = 30° the velocity and acceleration of the centre of the
roller B in the horizontal guide and the angular velocity and angular acceleration of edge CB. [Ref.:
Engineering Mechanics Dynamics, J. L. Meriam L. G. Kraige]

Draw the profile of a cam operating a knife-edge follower with a lift of 30 mm. The cam raises the
follower with Simple Harmonic Motion (SHM) over 120º of its rotation, followed by a dwell period
of 100º. The follower then descends over the next 100º of the cam's rotation with uniform velocity,
followed by another dwell period. The cam rotates at a uniform velocity of 240 rpm and has a least

radius of 15 mm. What will be the maximum velocity and acceleration of the follower during the lift
and the return? (Ref: SS Ratan)

Solution:
𝐺𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑛: 𝑟 = 15 𝑚𝑚, ℎ = 30 𝑚𝑚, 𝑁 = 240 𝑅𝑃𝑀, 𝜙 = 120°, 𝛿 = 100° 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝜙 = 100°
Constructing displacement diagram, where 0-6 represent the ascent and 6-11 represent descent.

On drawing the cam profile after choosing an appropriate scale.

ℎ 𝜋𝜔 30 25.12𝜋 𝑚𝑚
𝑣 = = × 𝜋 = 565.2

During descent,
𝜔 25.12 𝑚𝑚
𝑣 =ℎ = 30 × 𝜋 = 432
𝜙 100 × 𝑠

Determine the cam profile if it descends with constant deceleration while the follower used is a

roller follower with a diameter of 8 mm, maintaining all the other properties as above.

[ME444] – Analysis and Design of Mechanical Systems (ADOMS) 4

Solution:
𝐺𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑛: 𝑟 = 15 𝑚𝑚, 𝑟 = 4 𝑚𝑚, ℎ = 30 𝑚𝑚, 𝑁 = 240 𝑅𝑃𝑀, 𝜙 = 120°, 𝛿 = 100°, 𝜙 = 100°

Derive equations to describe segments of a displacement of a high-speed cam in which the follower
smoothly travels with parabolic motion from a dwell to another dwell such that the total lift is L
during cam rotation angle β. [Ref.: Engineering Mechanics Dynamics, J. L. Meriam L. G. Kraige]
Q4
Finally, displacement should only function of L, and cam angle β.
Hint: Choose the general equation of a parabola.

Two spur gears have a velocity ratio of 1/3. The driven gear has 72 teeth of 8 mm module and rotates
at 300 rpm. Calculate the number of teeth and the speed of the driver. What will be the pitch line
Q5 velocities? (Ref: SS Ratan)
Hint: m=d/T where m=module of gear and T= no. of teeth on gear and d= pitch circle dia.
Concept : two metting gears have same module

Solution:
T2 = 72, N2 = 300 rpm;
m= 8 mm,
VR = 1/3 = N2/N1 = T1/T2 .......(1)
⇒ Substitute N2 and T2 in eq. (1), get N1= 900rpm & T2=24.
For pitch line velocity,
Vp=2π N1 (d1/2)= 2π N2 (d2/2)= 2π N1 (mT1/2)= 2π N2 (mT2/2) = 9.0478m/s
