Name: Ta Quy Tuong

Student Number: 99484046

Course: MHF4U-EN-02-02-ON-(I-D-0922)
Assignment 1
1. Question 1:
a. has a degree of 4 -> it must include x 4
b. has three terms
c. one of the terms has degree 1 -> it must include x
d. one of the terms has a coefficient of -5
e. has a y-intercept at 10 -> it must include 10
 It must contain all 3 terms as required in (b) and 3 terms
included: x 4 and x
Case 1: −5 x 4 + x +10
Case 2: x 4 −5 x +10
Those are not the only possible answers because the
expression can still meet all the requirements after changing
the coefficient of the expression.
For example:
-5 x 4 + x +10
4
12 x −5 x +10
4
−5 x +9 x +10
4
−3 x −5 x +10

Therefore those are not the only possible answers that meet
Rods requirements.
2. Question 2
Potter says that he is thinking of a one variable polynomial
expression that has the following characteristics:
a. has a degree of 3

1
b. has three terms
c. one of the terms has degree 2
d. one of the terms has a coefficient of 7
e. has a y-intercept at 69
What are 2 different polynomials that Potter could be
thinking of? Are those the only possible answers? Please
include an explanation or rationale with your response.
(i) Follow a) -> check the degree: highest power
(ii) Follow b) -> check number of terms: must contain
exactly three terms
(iii) Follow c) -> check it must include term x 2or not
(iv) Follow d) -> check if one term has a coefficient of 7
(v) Follow e) -> check if one term has +69
Possible answers: 3 2
7 x + x +69
3 2
x +7 x +69

3. Question 3
a. a domain of { x ∈ R | 2 ≤ x ≤ 10}, and
b. a range of { y ∈ R | 5 ≤ x ≤ 10},
Graphs:

4. Question 4
A. First example:
2
f ( x )=3 x + x
a=3
n=2

x y 1st 2nd difference

difference
-2 10 2 – 10 = -8 (-2) – (-8) = 6
-1 2 0 – 2 = -2 4 – (-2) = 6
0 0 4–0=4 10 – 4 = 6
1 4 14 – 4 = 10
2 14

- 2nd difference
- Constant finite differences is 6
- Second degree
- Leading coefficient is 3.

B. Second example:

3
3
f ( x )=−2 x + x

a=−2
n=3

x y 1st 2nd difference 3rd

difference difference
-2 14 1 – 14 = -13 -1 – (-13) = 12 0 – 12 = -12
-1 1 0 – 1 = -1 -1 – (-1) = 0 -12 – 0 = -12
0 0 -1 – 0 = -1 -13 – (-1) = -12
1 -1 14 – (-1) = -
13
2 -14

- 3rd difference
- Constant finite difference is -12
- Degree is third degree
- Leading coefficient is -2

C. Third example:
4
f ( x )=7 x + x
a=7
n=4

x y 1st difference 2nd difference 3rd 4th

difference difference
-3 56 110 – 654 = - (-104) – (-454) = 98 – 350 = - (-84) – (-252) =
4 454 350 252 168
-2 11 6 – 110 = -104 (-6) – (-104) = 14 – 98 = -84 84 – (-84) = 168
0 98
-1 6 0 – 6 = -6 8 – (-6) = 14 98 – 14 = 84 252 – 84 = 168
0 0 8–0=8 106 – 8 = 98 350 – 98 = 252
1 8 114 – 8 = 106 456 – 106 = 350
2 11 570 – 114 = 456

Conclusion:
- The n is equal to the degree and also the amount of constant
finite differences.
Example: x 4= 4th difference
- The a is the leading coefficient which has a relationship with the
size of the constant differences.
Example: the larger the leading coefficient, the larger the size of
the constant difference.

2
f ( x )=3 x + x
a=3, constant difference = 6
4
f ( x )=7 x + x

a=7, constant difference = 168
