Technology Tools

At the end of this Module, you will be able to:

Synthesize a Technology – Based Output Production in various Tools and Applications
available:

a. Multimedia
b. MS Office Tools
c. Internet Based Applications

PAGE 1
THE OPEN-ENDED TOOLS
Open – ended tools are applications and teaching platforms used as mechanisms to teach
students which are modifiable, moldable that can produce a non-limiting learning
experience which can result to varied and freethinking outputs. In short, open-ended tools
are used to explore a learning process providing hands on knowledge to explore the “hows”
and “whys” of the learning process. On the other hand, open-ended tools promote
productivity and cultivates higher form of knowledge development as it implies analysis
and critical thinking upon manipulation of such applications.

EXAMPLES OF OPEN-ENDED TOOLS

There are many types of open-ended tools that are used in teaching. The choice of a specific
open-ended teaching tool depends on the preference of the teacher. A teacher can select
among a vast array of teaching tools depending on what suits best in his or her teaching
style. In short, a teacher must be kept in synchronous in the open-ended tools he or she will
be using.

As explained earlier about the vast number of open-ended tools but on this lesson, we will
narrow down the list and will explore the most commonly used by both students and
teachers. All open-ended tools start as virtual. A virtual work being done in a computer is
called a soft copy. One a virtual worked is being printed in a piece of paper or other printable
material using a printer, it is then called a hard copy. Not all open-ended tools are produced
as hard copy, some tool products are utilized in its soft copy form.

1. The Microsoft Office

Microsoft Office is a cluster of desktop productivity applications that is designed
specifically by Microsoft Corporation. MS Office as it was slangily called was first
released in 1990. For decades, MS Office has been a dominant model in delivering
modern office-related document-handling software environments. In the teaching
practice, MS Office applications are present on majority of the computers used by
the school in both academic and administrative functions. It is available in 35
different languages and is supported by Windows, Mac and most Linux variants.

PAGE 2
Top 4 Applications of the MS Office used in Teaching and Learning:

a. MS Word

Word is a virtual word processor that enables a user to type words,

phrases, sentences and paragraphs with the use of alphabets and numbers.
Other tools within the MS Word can enhance the typed words such as
indention, font style and size, inserting of pictures and tables and many more
produce teaching and learning outputs such as letters, lessons, modules,
reports, assignments, quizzes and many more.

b. MS Excel
Excel is a helpful program for data analysis and recording. It is a spreadsheet
program which comprises of a number of columns and rows, where in a user
can encode specific characters like numbers and letters. Excel is also a
powerful tool in creating calculations with state-of-the-art formulations to
give the user a shortcut in solving lengthy mathematical problems. The
interface of MS Excel looks like a virtual record book. In teaching and
learning this application is very useful in keeping records of grades, inventory
of items, solving arithmetic and book keeping transactions. MS Excel can also
be used in making tables and figures for reports and lessons.

c. MS Publisher
Publisher is a publishing application which enables a user to create a variety of
publications. This is important to teachers and students especially in projects,
programs and various activities of the school. Using Publisher, you can easily create
business cards, greeting cards, calendars, newsletters magazines, tarpaulin lay outs
and many more.

d. MS Powerpoint
Powerpoint is used to make presentations for personal and professional purposes. It
is an application that is mainly used to present data and information by using text,
diagrams with animation, images, and transitional effects in a form of slides. It
visually helps people to better understand the idea or topic in front of the
audience practically and easily. Powerpoint is very useful in teaching and learning
sessions involving class room discussion, group reports, oral defense, meeting
presentations, seminars and trainings.

2. Capturing, Recording and Editing Tools

a. Mobile Phone

Mobile Phones or Cellular Phones or Cellphone in short is the identity of

technology in the 21st Century wherein phones are now enabled with technology
known as smart phones. But in the late 2010’s, smart phones became a subordinate
of the more advanced AI Phones. Although there are many existing operating
systems in the mobile phone industry, there are two tech giants that dominate the
mobile world: apple and android. Either of the two mobile systems, both in their
application stores, you can personalize your phone and make it an all in one device
to photograph, to record an audio or a video, to edit and to explore the online world.
Everything is available 24/7 in the reach of your hands – all because of the arrival of
mobile phones in the history of technology. In teaching and learning, the most basic
and the most available technology on both a teacher and a student’s hand are mobile
phones.

Example of Mobile Phones are shown below:

b. Photo Camera

In the 21st century, a camera does not involve a film or a dark room to develop
the pictures, what you need is a battery and a memory stick plus a powerful
digital camera. Photo cameras are devices intended to specialize in saving
important moments thru photography. What makes a camera different from
mobile devices is its focus in developing high definition pictures that a mobile
phone may do in a mediocre level. Photography is a powerful tool in selecting
the best images to be used in teaching and learning. The most modern types of
cameras are the DSLRs.

DSLR Cameras can capture the best quality images among various image capturing
tools present in the market

c. Video Camcorder

The same scenario from a camera’s point of view goes with the video camcorder.
Although mobile phones and cameras have the capability of recording a video,
nothing beats the quality of video cameras or camcorders in terms of high definition
and high quality of details in the videos being recorded. Until now, looking in the
more commercial and more budgeted productions in film and the movies, it is still
video cameras the broadcasting networks use in making high quality video content.

d. Audio Recorder

An audio recorder is either a device itself or an application from your mobile

phone, camera or video camcorder that has the capability to record the sound
and convert it into a file. The good news is; lesser digital memory is required to
record sounds versus a video footage. Audio recording devices and applications
is very useful in studying as you can willingly go back to a certain part of your
professor’s lecture or you can use audio files to compile your sound-based
projects such as research, investigative documentaries and many more. Audio
can also be used as a command to your students or as a message to your class by
spreading it using virtual connection in any of the online platforms available as
of the moment.

e. Picture Editing Tools

These are not gadgets but rather applications which enables the user to
modiefy, correct, enhance or control the appearance of a photographed image.
This includes adjusting the brightness, applying a filter, removing unnecessary
background and many more. To mention a few, examples of this applications are
pics art, android collage, photoshop, paint application and many more.

f. Audio/Video Making and Editing Tools

Same with the case of picture editing tools, thes are not gadgets but rather
applications which enables the user to modify, correct, enhance or control the
appearance of a recorded footage. This includes cutting the video in a specific
duration, applying a special effects to a video, compiling series of videos and
making it into a movie, removing unnecessary background and many more.
Some of this applications are power director, quik application, windows,
kenemaster and many more.

PAGE 7
e. Tools for Specialized Purposes

This are applications that enables a user to do special tasks in the computer
rather in an actual setting. For example applications like sibellus and musescore
enables the teacher to create musical pieces by plotting notes in the computer
screen rather than doing it themselves with the use of pen and paper. Another
example is “Autocad” which enables those who are inclined in planning
structures to construct blue prints and building plans virtually. Another example
of a tools for specialized purposes are the 5D Planner which helps architects and
interior designers design details of houses via simulation. Another one is the
application that scans plagiarized work in the papers of students. Other
simulator tools can help both students and teachers to practice on a specific skill
virtually prior to the actual application.

e. Viewing and Playing Tools

Are applications that serve as carrier or host to observe all outputs being
made by the teachers and students. VLC and Windows media players can play both
music and video. Windows photo viewer enables users to take a closer and more
detailed way of the picture being examined. PDF enables the learners to view and
read e-books and magazines.

2. Virtual Online Applications

a. Social Media
SocMed as what the newer generation call it are various websites that exist
to link the society making the world smaller due to frequent virtual contacts – a
thinkg that the past century does not have. Social media like Youtube, Facebook,
Twitter, Instagram, Lyka and many more can be of big help to establishing learning.
As long as a certain limit on usage of social media will be regulated. Through a dual
comment based and chat-based system of communication, you as a teacher can
connect to your students anytime of the week.

PAGE 8
b. Virtual Classroom Tools

One classic example of this is the application we are using right now in our
TTL 2 Class – The google classroom. Virtual classrooms are applications that contain
learning tools to be set-up by teachers and to be fed to students in an online set-up.
There are more than dozens of applications that has a similar purpose like that of
Google Classroom.

c. Online Conferencing Tools

These tools enable a group of people to meet with each other virtually using
a device camera and speaker. Some online conferencing tools are built-in in a device
like that of apple’s iphone. Conferencing tools are very vital applications in terms of
live presentation, discussion, online oral forums, virtual recitations, lectures and
seminars (webinar) and most especially group meetings.

d. Online – Based Tools

For some individuals who does not have a device or does not have the
installed applications in their device, another option is still available in using
technology in teaching and learning. This is thorough accessing the internet and
search for the best online application that can help you accomplish your academic
task. You can lay out a school program online, or make an edit using the internet
even without an actual application installed in your device. Or in the case of those
who even does not have a device, they can actually borrow or rent a device, access
online websites that can be used as technology tools.
