Course Title: Mathematics-II Code: AM-102

1. Find the ranks (by first reducing the matrix to Echelon form using elementary row trans-
formations).

3 1 3 −2 2 3 7 5
   
   
6 3 0 −7 2 5 11 5
Solution. (i) ρ(A) = 3, (ii) ρ(A) = 3, (iii) ρ(A) = 3, (iv) ρ(A) = 4.

2. Find the inverse (using elementary row transformations).

 

A = 3 2 3

3. Solve the system

x + 2y + 3z = 0

3x + 4y + 4z = 0

7x + 10y + 12z = 0
10 8
. Solution. x = − c, y = c, z = c, where c is an arbitrary constant.

4. Apply the test of rank to examine if the system of equations is consistent. Find the solution
if it is consistent.

x + y + z = −3

3x + y − 2z = −2

2x + 4y + 7z = 7

Solution. Inconsistent.

5. Find the value of α for which the following system of linear equations is consistent.

x + y − 3z = −2

3x − y − 2z = 1

2x + 3y − 5z = α

Solution. The system is consistent for α = −3.

6. Apply the test of rank to examine if the system of equations is consistent. Find the solution
if it is consistent.

x+y+z =6

x + 2y + 3z = 14

x + 4y + 7z = 30

Solution. Consistent. x = a − 2, y = 8 − 2a, z = a, where a is an arbitrary constant.

7. Apply the concept of rank to determine whether the system of equations is consistent. Find
the solution if it is consistent.

x + 2y − z = 3

3x − y + 2z = 1

2x − 2y + 3z = 2

x − y + z = −1

Solution. Consistent. x = −1, y = 4, z = 4.

the eigenvalues of αA.
