I. Objectives
Cognitive: Define subject and verb in a sentence. Describe the rules in Subject-Verb
Agreement.

Affective: Maintain the interest of the students regarding the Subject-Verb Agreement.

Psychomotor: Construct sentences by using the different rules in Subject-Verb


Agreement.

II. Subject Matter

1. Discussion
In Subject-Verb Agreement, there is a basic
rule. A singular subject takes singular verb,
whereas a plural subject takes a plural verb.

Singular means what?

Remember class that verbs, have S-form of


the word for the singular form and the base
form for its plural form. Please take a look at
the examples.

1. The pronoun “YOU” always takes plural
verb.
Examples:
You were invited to come.
You are asked to clean the room.
You sing so well.

Now, give your own examples. You write an article about local issues.
You need to take a rest.

2. If the sentence begins with HERE or


THERE, the verb agrees with the subject
which follows it.
Examples:
Here are the ways on how preserve meat.
There is a huge gap between the rich and the
poor.

Now, give your own examples. There is a flower in her room.


Here are the keys.

3. If two subjects, one single and one plural,


are connected by EITHER/NOR or
NEITHER/NOR, the verb agrees with the
nearer subject.
Examples:
Neither the players nor the coach is joining.
Either the conductor or the singers are
attending the concert.

Neither Myra nor Jane is going to the party.

Either she or I am mistaken.

4. A singular subject followed by intervening


words or phrases such WITH, AS WELL AS,
IN ADDITION TO, ACCOMPANIED BY,
TOGETHER WITH and NO LESS THAN,
takes a singular verb.
Examples:
Jake, accompanied by his friends, is enrolling
in PCC.
Daddy, as well as my brother, is enjoying the
party.

Now, give your own examples. The manager, with his lawyer, is presenting
for a meeting.
Romeo, together with his friends, is going to
the beach.
5. Singular subjects joined by AND require a
plural verb, except when they mean one thing.
Example:
Larry and Mercy are reading novels.
My teacher and friend is here.

Now, give your own examples. John and Gary are best friends.
Travel and tourism is growing at a rapid rate.

6. Two singular subjects joined by


EITHER/OR and NEITHER/NOR take a
singular verb.
Examples:
Either Mommy or Daddy is coming me at the
outbound.
Neither Fred nor Dulce is waiting for you.

Now, give your own examples. Either Lorie or Sophia is arriving by train
today.
Neither Jazz or Jenny is available today.
7. If a singular subject is followed by a phrase
containing a plural noun, the verb is singular.
Examples:
One of the boys is yelling so loud.
One of the computers is not working.

Now, give your own examples. One of the cakes is not sweet.
One of the students is not good in science.
8. The indefinite pronouns SEVERAL, FEW,
BOTH, MANY, OTHES are always plural.
Examples:
Both were asking to be freed.
Several are seeking justice.
Other are not coming in the meeting.

Now, give your own examples. Many of them are not interested.
Several topics are not easy.

9. The indefinite pronouns SOME, MOST,


ALL, NONE, are singular or plural according
to the meaning of the sentence.
Examples:
Some of the girls were absent.
Some of the ice cream is left.

Now, give your own examples. Some of the instructions are not clear.
All of the products are expensive.

10. When any of the following indefinite


pronouns is the subject, the verb is singular:
EVERYBODY,EACH,NO ONE,
ANOTHER, ANYBODY, NOBODY,
EVERY, NOTHING, EVERYTHING,
ANYONE, EITHER, NEITHER,
EVERYONE, SOMENODY, SOMEONE.
Examples: Ever man and woman in this hall
is a member.
Everyone is coming to the meeting

Now, give your own examples. Everyone has his own story.
Every society has traditions.
2.Generalization
A singular subject takes singular verb,
whereas a plural subject takes a plural verb.
When pronoun “you” is used, it always takes
plural verb. Subjects connected by either/nor
or neither/nor, the verb agrees with the nearer
subject. If a singular subject is followed by an
intervening words or phrases, it takes a
singular verb. Singular subjects joined by
“and” require a plural verb. You need singular
verb if two singular subjects are joined by
either/or and neither/nor.
The verb is singular if a singular subject is
followed by a phrase containing a plural
noun.
Several, few, both, many, others are always
plural. Some, most, all, none, are singular or
plural according to the meaning of the
sentence. Everybody, each, no one, another,
anybody, nobody, every, nothing, everything,
anyone, either, neither, everyone, somebody,
someone are singular.

spot a wrong use of verb in a sentence. I guess
