Spoken vs Written Grammar

At the end of the lesson the student will be able to:


a. understanding Informality and Flexibility in Spoken Grammar
b. recognizing the Structure and Formality in Written Grammar and;

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SPOKEN GRAMMAR AND WRITTEN GRAMMAR?

SPOKEN GRAMMAR

Is informal and used in everyday interaction .It is generally strict and more flexible than written
grammar.

CHARACTERISTICS OF SPOKEN GRAMMAR

1.ELLIPSIS-is the omission of elements normally part of a certain structure and is found in either
spoken or written spoken.
Example:
‘’Do you have any questions?’’’ (No Ellipsis)
‘’Any question?’’’ (Ellipsis)

2.DISLOCATION- is a sentence structure in which constituent occurs outside the boundaries. Allows
speaker to highlight the topic they want to talk about before commenting on it.

Example:

“The T20 finals last night, it was really exciting.” (With Head)
“The T20 finals last night was really exciting.” (No Head)

3.TAILS- also known as right-dislocation ,are comments that are added to the end of phrase.
Ex.
“My colleague is a nice person, the one from New Zealand.”
(With Tail)
“My colleague from New Zealand is really nice.”
(No Tail)

4.FILLERS- are words and utterance like ”er’’, ”well’’, ’’hmmm’’, and “um” that do not have specific
meaning.

5.BACKCHANNELS- are words and utterances like ”uh-uh, “oh’’, “yeah”, and I see’’.

6. PHRASAL CHUNKS- words or phrases that can combine with other elements but act as ready-made
lexical units of language.

Examples:

Stuff like that
You Know
I mean
A bit
A little bit
You know

WRITTEN GRAMMAR

It is typically formal, complex and intricate than spoken grammar. It is often grammatically correct and
may contain long sentences in complex tense.

Written Grammar is more formal and inflexible. The sentence is the basic unit of constructions in written
grammar, More complex and intricate than speech with longer Sentence and the written grammar is
consist of Letters and words.

Writing is usually permanent and written text cannot usually be changed once they have been printed /
written out
A written grammar can communicate across time and space as long as the particular language and
writing system is still understood
Writers use punctuations heading layout colors and other graphical effects in written text
CHARACTERISTICS OF WRITTEN GRAMMAR

1. SYNTAX
Refers to the Structure of sentences, and is more important in written language than in spoken
language. In writing, clear and well-structured sentences are essential for conveying meaning effectively.

Examples: “The cat sat on the mat.”


“on the mat sat the cat.”
2. PUNCTUATION
plays a critical role in grammar, helping to convey meaning and to indicate pauses and emphasis
Example: ” I went to the store to buy milk.”

3. VOCABULARY
Written Language often requires a wider range of Vocabulary and more formal style than
spoken language

Example: "The Elderly woman was ambling down the street enjoying the warm sunshine."

4. PROOF READING Written language is Oftenly subjected to more vigorous editing and proof
reading process to acquire accuracy and clarity.
Example:" The cat was sitting on the mat, and it's paws were neatly folded beneath it.
5.FORMALITY
Written language is more formal than spoken language. It is used in variety of settings including
academic writing, professional documents and published works
Examples: "I am writing you this letter to inform that the deadline of your project will be extended by
one week."

SUMMARY

Aside from form the difference of the two is that the spoken grammar is more digit than written
grammar.
The spoken grammar Is spontaneous Therefore, it might be grammatically incorrect or lack of word
structure

On the other hand the written grammar is more grammatical and nearly conform to customary rules and
grammar.
There are structures that exceeds only in writen grammar making more efficient than spoken grammar
both spoken and written grammar is important in their own ways. They are both valuable in different
context.
The communication skills are often requires the mastery of both spoken and written grammar.
