Introduction
Software is a set of instructions, data, or programs used to operate a computer and execute
specific tasks. In simpler terms, software tells a computer how to function. It’s a generic
term used to refer to applications, scripts and programs that run on devices such as PCs,
mobile phones, tablets and other smart devices. Software contrasts with hardware, which is
the physical aspect of a computer that performs the work.
For example, web browser

1. AutoCAD
(GetIntoPc) The meaning of AutoCAD is “Automatic Computer-Aided Design”. The AutoCAD
software is made for design and draft. The AutoCAD offers a civil engineer to the analysis of
the ideas of a creative structure. It is proposed a civil engineer for designing products and
also for creative structures. It helps us to perform rapid design calculations. The AutoCAD
also allows us to simulations in the field of civil. The software is extremely powerful for
creating and rendering complex drawings in 3D. Nearly every aspect of the user interface is
customizable to the preferences of the drafter. AutoCAD also has powerful features to help
with multiple aspects of creating a set of plans.

Some following advantages are:

 To draft the exact design, people from all over the world using AutoCAD.
 In AutoCAD 2D, 3D drawing can be created, and also possible to rotate that new draft.
 The AutoCAD enables an Engineer to design, and analyze the strength of a building. It
also helps to solve those problems in a simple way.
 Civil engineers used this AutoCAD for base map creation. It helps to makes better
construction documentation.
 There are also a lot of benefits for Civil. These are:
 Bridge Modeling, Geospatial analysis, Geo-Technical Training, GPS Survey & Data
Collection, Good Drafting Standards, and Styling Tools, etc.

2. Microsoft Project
(Google) Microsoft Project is a project management software product, developed and sold
by Microsoft. It is designed to assist a project manager in developing a plan, assigning
resources to tasks, tracking progress, managing the budget, and analysing workloads.

Uses of Microsoft Projects are:

2
 Improved estimation
 Greater Control
 Easier tracking
 Better collaboration
 Measuring results and comparing projects

3. Revit
(Google) Revit enables the creation of 3D models, it helps sales and marketing teams explain
the potential of a project to customers. Analysing these models may help in planning
maintenance, as it provides architectural drafts and blueprints. The virtual reality element
these models provide acts as a sales pitch for customers, as they can examine a mock-up of
a to-be-constructed building.

Revit is used for the following reasons:

 Civil engineers can use Revit to accurately streamline data with architectural and
MEP teams.
 A structural model can be created by the accurate placement of beams and columns.
 Structural models created by civil engineers in Revit can then be coordinated with
the MEP models created in Revit, and any clashes between structural elements and
MEP services can be rectified in the designing stage itself in Revit.
 Structural models can be easily created in Revit by civil engineers, with its wide
variety of tools. The models can then be imported to any design analysis software for
analysis and design. Creating such cross-platform compatible models is otherwise
tedious in any other structural designing software.
 Once the rebar quantities are obtained from Revit Structure, these rebar’s can then
be placed inside the created model, and accurate 3D views and detailing views can
be generated in Revit that is much easier to understand and interpret on site.
 Revit can also be used to extract quantities regarding the volume of concrete
required for beams, columns, slabs and other structural elements, and costs related
to the same can be calculated.

3
 ‘Bar bending schedules’ can be easily generated through Revit, including the weight
of steel required and the cost incurred.
 Both RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete) structures and steel structures can be easily
modelled in Revit, along with proper structural connections.
 Parametric structural steel connections can be edited according to the preferred
requirements.
 Civil engineers can also model their own connections (Custom Connections) and
place them in the model.

4. Carlson Survey
(G2) Carlson Survey is a Windows software application for the Surveyor’s office to manage
the complete job cycle from field data collection to drafting a final plan with several CAD
options. With minimum effort and time, Carlson Survey allows users to design and produce
a 2D drawing, an enhanced 3D surface model and construction layout data sets, for
increasing their efficiency and profitability. Carlson Survey is designed for use for land
surveying. It provides a full tool kit for surveyors with everything from network least squares
to surface modeling. Users get the ability to work seamlessly between the office and the
field and they can establish company-wide design styles to ease and speed their work.

4
5. Site 3D
(G2) Site3D is a fully featured software product for the engineering design of highways,
drainage and residential developments. Quickly and accurately design whole sites including
roads, junctions, roundabouts, footways, surface interfacing, contours, volumes, drainage,
housing and more. Site3D is a powerful software tool for the 3D engineering used for to
design road schemes and infrastructure. It is very simple and easy to use with clearly
explained tools that produce good results. The software is excellent where abnormally-
shaped roads are required and the tech support is helpful and fast to respond. Site3D has
been designed from the ground up so that each design element does know how it interacts
with other design elements. This means when we modify one aspect of the design, all the
knock-on effects are automatically calculated and applied.

6. ATIR STRAP
(G2) ATIR Engineering Software Development Ltd was founded in 1983 with the aim of
developing structural analysis and design software that would be both sophisticated and
comprehensive but at the same time easy to use for the professional engineer. It covers the
entire design process from analysis to the production of drawings and schedules. STRAP is
capable of performing both linear static analysis, as well as, multi-step static analysis. STRAP
will automatically generate wind and seismic loads according to many design codes.
Additionally, a sophisticated moving load generator allows the user to apply moving loads
on frame and shell elements. Automatically generated Chess loading for beam elements.
The program includes:

• Design modules for calculating structural steel and cold-formed steel, reinforced concrete
and post-tensioned elements subjected to static, dynamic, wind and seismic loads.

• A bridge load and analysis module.

• Auto STRAP, a BIM (Building Information Modeling) module to create a structural model
from architectural drawings. STRAP offers the engineer a comprehensive, authoritative and
affordable tool for use in six different languages and is fully compliant with many
