Lesson Plan

This semi-detailed lesson plan for Grade 8 Mathematics focuses on teaching students about the probability of simple events. The lesson includes objectives, subject matter, a variety of activities such as word puzzles and games, and examples to illustrate probability concepts. Students will engage in group activities, evaluations, and assignments to reinforce their understanding of probability in real-life situations.

SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN

Teacher: KRISTY JOY P. FLORES Grade Level: 8

Date: May 14, 2024 Learning Area: Mathematics
Time: Quarter: Fourth

I. OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

a. define probability of a simple event;

b. find the probability of simple event; and
c. relate probability of simple event in real-life situations.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

A. Topic: Probability of Simple Event

B. References: Mathematics 8 Learner’s Module, First Edition, 2013.
C. Learning Competencies: Finds the probability of a simple event.
M8GE-IV-1
D. Materials: Laptop, Projector, Cartolina, Flashcard, Chalk, Eraser,
Chalkboard

III. PROCEDURE
A. Preliminary activities
1. Prayer
2. Greetings
3. Checking of Attendance
4. Setting of Classroom Standards
5. Review
Impossible or Certain?
 Your heart will beat. - Certain
 There are three Fridays in a week. - Impossible
 Sunday comes after Saturday. - Impossible

B. Lesson Proper
Motivation
WORD PUZZLE
How to Play!
1. The class will be divided into four groups.
2. There are 3 categories in each level. EASY LEVEL, MODERATE
LEVEL, HARD LEVEL.
3. Each of letter is scrambled. You have to guess the correct word to get
points. NOTE there is a hint for HARD LEVEL.
4. Every level has a corresponding point. Easy +2 points, Moderate +5
points, Hard +10 points.
5. The team with the most correct answer wins!

EASY LEVEL (2points)- 10 seconds

MODERATE LEVEL (5points)- 15 seconds

HARD LEVEL (10points)- 20 seconds

Presentation of Objectives

At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

a. define probability of a simple event;

b. find the probability of simple event; and
c. relate probability of simple event in real-life situations.

 Activity
“rock-paper-scissor game”
Instructions:
 Find a partner and let’s play rock-paper-scissors.
 You have three(3) rounds to play and record your result on the
paper I will provide you. Write W if you win and L if you lose.

Analysis
 How did you find the activity?
 How many times did you win or lose the game?

Now compare your result to your classmate.

Abstraction
 PROBABILITY – is the measure of how likely an event is to occur.
The more likely an event is to occur, the higher its probability. The
less likely an event is to occur, the lower its probability.

 SIMPLE EVENT – it is an event which has a single outcome.

 PROBABILITY OF A SIMPLE EVENT – it is a number from 0 to 1

which it tells how likely the event is to happen.

 FORMULA:

number of favorable outcomes

P(E) =
number of total outcomes

n(E)
P(E) =
n(S)

 Probability of an event- fraction, percent, decimal

 Probability Rules
- The probability of a simple event is a number from 0 to 1.
- If the event will never happen, then its probability is 0.
- If the event will never happen, then its probability is 0.

 EXAMPLE 1: When a fair die is thrown, find the probability of

getting the number 4?
Solution:
n(E)
P(E) =
n(S)

{4 } 1
P(4) = = or 0.16667 or 16.67%
{1 , 2, 3 , 4 ,5 , 6 } 6

 EXAMPLE 2: When a fair die is thrown, find the probability of

getting an odd number?
Solution:
n(E)
P(E) =
n(S)

{1 ,3 , 5 } 3 1
P(odd) = = = or 0.5 or 50%
{1 , 2, 3 , 4 ,5 , 6 } 6 2

 EXAMPLE 3: When a fair die is thrown, find the probability of

getting a number that is less than 7?
Solution:
n(E)
P(E) =
n(S)

{1 , 2, 3 , 4 ,5 , 6 } 6
P(less than 7) = = = 1
{1 , 2, 3 , 4 ,5 , 6 } 6

 EXAMPLE 4: Based on your activity, the rock-paper-scissors

game. Find the probability of the events.
Solution:
n(E)
1.) P(win) =
n(S)

n(E)
2.) P(lose) =
n(S)

C. Application (Group Activity)

Instructions:
1. The class will be divided into 4 groups.
2. Each group will be provided with flashcard and chalk to write their final
answer to the given problem that flash at the screen monitor.
3. After you write your final answer, raise your flashcard.

The team with the most correct answer wins!

QUESTIONS:
1) Probability of a __________ is a number from 0 to 1 which it tells how
likely the event is to happen. Simple Event
2) If the event will never happen, then its probability is __. 0
3) What is the formula for finding the probability of a simple event?

n(E)
P(E) =
n(S)
4) Find the probability of getting a head when tossing a coin?

{H } 1
P(head) = = or 0.5 or 50%
{H , T } 2

5) Find the probability of getting a tail when tossing a coin?

{T } 1
P(tail) = = or 0.5 or 50%
{H , T } 2

D. Generalization
1. What is Probability of Simple Event?
2. What is the formula for finding the probability of simple event?
3. How can you relate probability of simple event in real-life situations?

IV. EVALUATION
In a ¼ sheet of paper, answer it directly.

2. When a fair die is thrown, find the probability of getting an even number?
3. When a fair die is thrown, find the probability of getting a number that is more
than 7?

V. ASSIGNMENT

2. There are 30 grade 8 students; 11 of them are boys. Suppose the teacher will
randomly select a student who will present their class in Miss Intrams 2024. Find
the probability of selecting a right representative?
