In today’s Information System (IS) department, PC hardware

maintenance is too often treated as necessary evil, with the

understanding that eventually all equipment will have some
degree of failure such as:

1. Any piece of data processing equipment has a mean time

to failure (MTF) rating associated with each of its
component parts. Any component part can eventually fail
or “break” and will need to be serviced.
2. Repair calls tend to occur most frequently either when
the equipment item is new or when it is approaching the
end of its useful life.
3. Every computer installation requires several kinds of
ongoing maintenance.
4. The hardware needs maintenance services to repair
normal wear and tear and emergency services when
critical machine parts breakdown.
5. Where computers are networked, the network
infrastructure also will need maintenance.
6. The software, although it does not have parts that can
break and does not suffer “wear and tear” in the usual
sense nor have other issues related to a network, also
requires maintenance. The major and most immediate
reason to provide for software maintenance is to obtain a
means of correcting software defects or “bugs” as they
arise.

Installing a computer to meet the needs of the user is a one-

time process. Equipping with necessary devices and hardware
facilities and keeping stocks of library of software may sound
great, but maintaining the system or keeping the facilities
working and the data (or files) available for the users
requirements is a demanding job.

Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is one of

the four (4) components of Technology and Livelihood
Education. One of the mini-courses offered is Computer
Hardware Servicing.

The Computer Hardware Servicing National Certificate Level

II (NC II) Qualification consists of competencies that must
possess to enable to diagnose and troubleshoot problems in
personal computer systems, software, replace parts, and get
the system back to normal operation. A person who has
achieved this qualification is competent to be a computer
service technician or a computer repairman.

Now that the workforce is behind in equating the number of

available jobs, the Department of Education (DepEd) is
revitalizing its resources to prepare you by honing your skills
as future hardware service providers.

In this course, you will be introduced to different learning

activities preparing you to be skillful before you take the
plunge into the world of work as a hardware service provider
and to feel more confident while providing support where
needed. Indeed, as learners of hardware servicing, you are a
crucial link in the emergency response process. Ideally,
everyone should know what to do in an emergency situation,
but proper training can help an individual provide basic care.

1) install computer systems and networks; and

2) diagnose and troubleshoot computer systems.

Understanding a computer system is not an easy task. This

course will help you acquire knowledge, skills, and motivation
in the field of hardware servicing.

In a world where most business activities rely on information

technology in order to accomplish the job requirements,
computer systems and networks have become a vital part in
the major operations of a workplace. Because of this,
establishing a computer hardware servicing business will be
fruitful for an aspiring entrepreneur. CHS is a business that is
concerned with selling of hardware components and
peripherals, as well as rendering service to devices and
equipment.

Before establishing a computer hardware servicing business,

an aspiring entrepreneur must know the basic concepts,
theories, and core competencies needed to run it. Listed below
are some of them:
1. Knowledge in technical specifications – this is the
most basic concept that one must know before
engaging into a CHS business. This is concerned
with knowing how to check the qualities of a
hardware component. This is vital in determining the
components that will be needed based on specific
job requirements.
1.

Networking theories – these refer to the knowledge

needed to understand how a computer network works.
Without these theories, accomplishing a task that
requires the interconnection of computer systems will be
hard or even impossible to do. File and resource sharing
is one of the basic networking theories.

2.
Installation of computer systems and networks – this
competency is required when putting together the
hardware components needed in a computer system or
networks. This includes the actual handling and mounting
of components needed to accomplish a task.
3.
Configuration of computer systems and networks – this
skill is needed once the installation has been completed.
Configuring the installed computer systems and networks
is needed so that they will function specifically for the job
requirements they are designed to complete. Failure to
properly configure a computer system or network will
result in erroneous or incomplete outputs.
4.

Diagnosing and troubleshooting of computer systems and

networks – this proficiency is concerned with checking
the integrity of computer systems and networks by
running a series of physical and software testing.
Diagnosing means determining any faults while
troubleshooting is applying the appropriate actions to
correct the discovered faults so that proper operations
can resume.
6. Maintaining of computer systems and networks – this
know-how refers to the needs to keep the computer systems in
proper operating conditions at all times. It can be preventive,
one in which maintenance is conducted even when no fault has
been detected yet; or reactive, one in which maintenance
procedures are conducted when faults are already
experienced.

The above mentioned concepts, theories, and competencies

are the foundation of any computer hardware servicing
business. Knowing all of these will be advantageous to the
aspiring entrepreneur. If one is not certain if he already
possesses the needed proficiencies, he must research and seek
for advice so that problems that may arise in the future will be
minimized.
