ASSIGNMENT Module 8
My name is Nguyễn Thị Linh (22/01/2003), and I am a fourth-year student at the
School of Foreign Languages, Thai Nguyen University. I am passionate about integrating technology into language teaching to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes. This portfolio showcases the major assignments I completed as part of the "Integrating Technology into the Curriculum" course. Through this portfolio, I aim to demonstrate my professional growth and my ability to apply technological tools to language education. I envision this portfolio as a representation of my skills and achievements, which I can use to seek job opportunities and further my career in education. Reflection Participating in this course has given me the chance to boost my teaching skills, acquire new tools, methods, and resources to gather material, understand the key elements of learning English, combine technology and language use, grow professionally, and most importantly, integrate technology in my classes and curriculum. I intend to share my experience and knowledge in my teaching context by means of lectures and presentations. Teachers should be capable of identifying students’ needs, developing a lesson plan that complements the coursebook’s shortcomings, and integrating technology into their curriculum. Thus, creating new materials and activities to meet learning objectives. The ten-step process gives a clear insight into how to plan classes combining the use of technology. Planning is very important in order to determine students’ needs. Analysis, together with development and use, helps teachers outline the process of teaching. Instructors should work collaboratively and observe how students respond. Evaluation and revision are crucial for this cyclical process to make adjustments for later improvements. Though several are the gains I have had throughout the course, I will only mention three of them for the sake of brevity. These are exemplified in three of my major projects. The first one I would like to talk about is the one present in the Collaborative Writing assignment. I found the tool Google Docs incredibly useful for collaborative work. A great way for students to practice writing and get feedback is having the chance to edit the file, insert comments on the Doc, chat with participants, and revise changes. This tool is useful for creating activities that are more flexible and engaging for students; it changed my perspective in that writing can also be fun and compelling. The second gain I would like to mention is the one present in my major assignment on the Listening Lesson Plan. Not only have I had the opportunity to become more acquainted with the use of YouTube for educational purposes, but also with the concepts of bottom-up and top-down activities for teaching listening skills. In my lesson, you can see how I develop these two in the pre-listening and the while- listening tasks. This gain has enhanced my skills as a technology-using teacher. Using YouTube and other listening platforms is vital in order to integrate technology with language use. Last but not least, the third gain I have had throughout the course is present in my major assignment on Grammar Teaching Materials Development. On the one hand, you can see how the use of COCA is present in the activities I have designed and how this platform can help students get a better grasp on how words collocate. On top of that, the use of resources such as ‘the American English at State Facebook page’ and ‘VoA everyday grammar’ are also part of this lesson. This planning has given me a deeper insight into the endless possibilities of word combinations, collocations, etc., that we may come across when teaching grammar. I would definitely like to explore this aspect more and take my findings to my classes. I would like to get a better and clearer understanding of the readability tools. I want to look into these components so as to evaluate and properly choose the right reading for the right group of students. I also want to explore more the potential of social networks in order to enhance students’ English language skills. Week 2: Major Assignment: Using Social Media to Teach Vocabulary Title: “Exploring Fitness Vocabulary through Instagram” Brief Description: This lesson plan uses Instagram as a tool to teach vocabulary related to fitness and healthy living. Students will engage with posts, stories, and hashtags from fitness influencers to learn new words and phrases associated with exercise, nutrition, and wellness. The lesson will help students gain exposure to real-world language used in the context of fitness, encouraging them to interact with and absorb vocabulary in a visually dynamic and modern format. Students will engage with real-world sentences extracted from COFE, participate in matching exercises, fill-in-the-blank activities, and group discussions to practice using these adjectives correctly. The lesson is designed to help students understand and apply the grammatical structure in both written and spoken contexts. Title: Collaborative Writing Reflection Brief Description: This reflection is based on my experience participating in a collaborative writing task where our group wrote a formal letter to the Bureau of Cultural Affairs in the U.S. Department of State. The assignment involved working together on Google Docs, and we took turns fulfilling specific roles such as Initiator, Editor, and Contributor. Through this experience, I learned about the dynamics of group writing and how different roles contribute to the success of collaborative tasks. This reflection details my role, contributions, successes, challenges, and how this experience can inform my teaching of collaborative writing to students. The lesson includes pre-listening, while-listening, and post-listening activities. The selected resource is a TED Ed video on environmental conservation. Students will practice listening for general meaning and specific information using top-down and bottom-up approaches. The lesson is designed to engage students with both individual and group activities to ensure active participation and comprehension. Students will use WhatsApp to practice speaking in pairs, simulating real-life situations such as ordering food at a restaurant or discussing travel plans. The activity is designed for large classes, where students will work in groups and also complete individual speaking tasks. The lesson incorporates the use of WhatsApp for group communication, voice recordings, and feedback.
