A Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics 7

Content standard:
Performance standards:
I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson the students should be able to:
A. determine the differences between rational and irrational numbers;
B. identify the rational and irrational numbers; and
C. apply operations on rational and irrationals numbers.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

Topic: Rational and Irrational Numbers

Materials: Instructional Materials (visual aids), darts

III. PROCEDURE
Teacher's activity Students’ activity
A. Preliminaries

•Prayer
Before we start, please stand. : (lerry can leads the prayer)
Lerry, please lead the prayer.

•CUSTOMARY GREETINGS

Good morning class! : Good morning, ma’am.

Before to take your seats class kindly arrange

your chairs and pick the pieces around your : the students will follow the
chairs. instruction.

Let's check your attendance!

Good to know that no one is absent today.

B. Motivation
Let’s have a game our game is called Putsukeyn
mokow. You will be group into 3 groups, each
group will allow to play a darts which is the
Putsukeyn mokow game.

For the mechanics.

1. If a player successfully hits the desired
letter and number with their dart, they
earn points based on the combination.

1|Page
2. As a group you can assign different point
values to each letter or number,
depending on the difficulty or
significance.
3. For example, hitting a common letter like
"I" might be worth fewer points than
hitting a rare letter like "L."
4. Similarly, hitting a rational number might
be worth one set of points, while hitting
an irrational number could be worth
another set of points.

Remember, safety is paramount while playing

darts. Ensure that bystanders are at a safe
distance and always be cautious when retrieving
darts from the board. Have fun and enjoy the
game of darts!

C. Presentation of the lesson

Ok class based on the activity we had what do

you think is the connection of those numbers in
our lesson?

Yes Angeline : It is about rational numbers and

irrational numbers.
That's a good idea!

Who else can give me another idea about the

connection of the activity in our lesson?

Yes hazel! : about the differences of rational and

irrational numbers.
Very good!

D. Development of the lesson

Let's begin our discussion in rational and

irrational numbers.

• Rational and Irrational Numbers

- there are both real numbers but different
with respect to their properties.
- 2/3 is an example of rational number
whereas ✓2 is an irrational number.

1. Rational Number
- word “rational” is derived from the word
‘ratio' which means a comparison of two
or more values or integer number and is

2|Page
known as a fraction.
- Rational number are numbers which can
be expressed as fraction and a positive
number, negative numbers and zero.
- it can be written as p/q where q is not
equal to zero.

Example:

Now let's proceed to

2. Irrational Number
- The numbers which are not rational
numbers are called irrational numbers.

Now let us elaborate irrational numbers.

- Irrational numbers could be written in
decimals but not in the form of fractions
which means they cannot be written as a
ratio of two integers.
- irrational numbers have endless
nonrepeating digits after the decimal.

Example:

•Differences between Rational and Irrational

Numbers

The key difference between rational and

irrational number is the rational number is
expressed in the form of p/q whereas it is not
possible for a rational number.

Class what is the difference of rational and

irrational number again?

Yes Aldrina : ma’am real numbers,

Very good!

Take note class that an irrational number cannot : Yes ma’am

be expressed in the form of ratio but rational
does.

Example:
- rational number include perfect square
such as 4, 9, 16, 25 and so on

3|Page
:4²=4×4=16 or (-4) = (-4) (-4) =16
5²=5×5=25 or (-5) ²= (-5) (-5) =25
10²=10×10=100 or (-10) ²= (-10) (-10) =100

- Irrational numbers include surds such as

✓2✓3✓5✓7 and so on

If this are already clear, we can now proceed to

Operations on Real Numbers

Example 1: Addition

Solve (2√2 + 7√7) + (13√2 – 4√7).

Solution:

(2√2 + 7√7) + (13√2 – 4√7)

= (2√2 + 13√2) + (7√7 – 4√7)

= (2 + 13) √2 + (7-4) √7

= 15√2 + 3√7

Example 2: Multiplication

Solve (7√7) x (- 4√7)

Solution:

(7√7) x (- 4√7)

= 7 x -4 x √7 x √7

= -28 x 7 = -196

Who wants to try example 3 and 4?

Example 3: division
Solve (8√21 / 4√7)

Yes lady! : (8√21 / 4√7)

= (8√7 x √3 / 4√7)

4|Page
= 2 x √7 x √3 / √7 = 2√3

Very good!

Example 4: subtraction : (2√2 + 7√7) (2√2 – 7√7)

Solve (2√2 + 7√7) - (2√2 – 7√7).
= (2√2)2 – (7√7)2
Yes Lerry!
= 4 x 2 – 49 x 7

= 8 – 343 = -335

E. APPLICATION
To test your understanding of our lesson, you
will have an activity I will group you into 3
groups, the first group who got the highest score
will be the winner and they will receive a price.

For the Mechanics

1. After the color and identity letter have

been announced, all players (including
the player who drew the card) race to
identify an object or word that matches
the announced colour. The object or word
must start with the same letter as the
identity letter.
2. The first player to provide a valid answer
(matching the color and starting with the
correct letter) wins the round.
3. To ensure accuracy, players can refer to a
predetermined list of valid objects or
words associated with each color, or the
group can agree on acceptable answers
before the game starts.
4. If a player provides an incorrect answer
or fails to come up with a valid response,
the turn passes to the next player, and
they draw a new colour card.
5. At the end of the game, the player with
the highest number of points is declared
the winner.

The Color Game is not only entertaining but also

a valuable opportunity for students to enhance
their color recognition and letter association
skills. Enjoy the game and have fun exploring
the vibrant world of colors!

F. Valuing

Rational thinking and Irrational thinking

play distinct roles in shaping our decision-
making processes and overall behaviour.
Rational thinking involves logical reasoning,
objective analysis of facts, and consideration of
long-term consequences, enabling individuals to
make informed choices based on evidence and
sound judgment. It promotes critical thinking
and problem-solving, allowing us to navigate
complex situations with clarity and coherence.
On the other hand, irrational thinking is
characterized by impulsive emotions, cognitive
biases, and flawed reasoning, often driven by
subjective beliefs, fears, or desires. It can lead to
hasty judgments, irrational fears, and impulsive
actions that disregard evidence or overlook
potential consequences. Recognizing the
interplay between rational and irrational thinking
empowers us to cultivate self-awareness,
challenge biases, and strive for a balanced
approach that maximizes logical reasoning while
acknowledging the role of emotions and intuition
in our decision-making process.

G. Generalization

If you really listen in our discussion, kindly give

the two topic we discuss?
Yes Adrina.

In this activity you will going to find classify if
the following numbers are rational or irrational
numbers and squaring the root of the numbers.

Am I clear to you?

if that's clear then here is your activity. : Yes ma’am

1. Find any 5 rational numbers between 5

and 6 so multiply and divide the numbers
5 and 6 by 5 + 1. : 1. Between 5 and 6 are
