Introduction

Visual arts are forms of art that focus on creating images or designs that can be seen.
These include drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, and digital art. Artists use
colors, lines, shapes, textures, and space to create their work. Some artworks are
realistic, showing objects and people as they appear in real life, while others are
abstract, using shapes and colors to express emotions or ideas. Visual arts can be
created using different materials, such as pencils, paint, clay, or digital tools. Whether
simple or complex, visual arts allow people to share their creativity through images and
designs.

2. World History of Visual Arts


a. Prehistoric Art - The earliest form of visual expression, created by early
humans using natural materials. It includes cave paintings, petroglyphs, and
small sculptures, often linked to rituals, communication, or survival.
b. Ancient Art - Developed by early civilizations, it was often tied to religion,
power, and daily life. It featured monumental architecture, sculptures, and
paintings, reflecting cultural beliefs and societal structures.
c. Medieval Art - Dominated by religious themes, medieval art focused on
storytelling through illuminated manuscripts, mosaics, and architecture. It
evolved from Romanesque to Gothic styles, emphasizing symbolism and
devotion.
d. Renaissance Art - Marked by a revival of classical ideals, Renaissance art
emphasized humanism, perspective, and realism. Artists explored anatomy, light,
and composition to achieve a greater sense of depth and naturalism.
e. Baroque and Rococo - Baroque art was dramatic and emotional, while Rococo
was lighter and more decorative. Both styles reflected the cultural shifts of their
time, focusing on movement, contrast, and intricate detail.
f. Neoclassicism and Romanticism - Neoclassicism drew inspiration from
ancient art, emphasizing order and harmony. Romanticism, in contrast, focused
on emotion, nature, and individual expression, often reacting against
industrialization.
g. Modern Art - Modern art broke away from traditional techniques, exploring new
styles and perspectives. It included movements such as Impressionism, Cubism,
Expressionism, and Surrealism, each challenging artistic norms and redefining
visual representation.
h. Contemporary Art - A diverse and evolving period where art is influenced by
technology, social issues, and personal expression. It includes various styles like
Pop Art, Minimalism, Street Art, and Digital Art, often blurring the lines between
art and everyday life.

3. Philippine History of Visual Arts


a. Pre-Colonial Art Period - Even before foreign influence, early Filipinos
expressed creativity through indigenous art forms such as weaving, tattooing,
pottery, and sculpting. These artworks were often functional and symbolic,
reflecting beliefs, rituals, and daily life.
