PHYS 102 Özyeğin University – Department of Physics Spring 2024/2025

Homework (HW) Assignment

HW assignments are not mandatory for submission and will not be graded. Students are strongly
encouraged to complete the assigned problem sets to develop a consistent study routine for Physics II.
The solutions will be made available to students via LMS one week after the problem sets are handed out.

Problem set 1
Revisiting fundamental mathematical methods used in electricity & magnetism

Question 1 (Vectors)

Two vectors ⃗a = ı̂ + 2ȷ̂ + k̂ and ⃗b = 2ı̂ − k̂ are given.

a) Find ⃗a + ⃗b in terms of unit vectors.

b) Find ⃗a − ⃗b in terms of unit vectors.

c) Find â in terms of unit vectors. Can â carry any units? If so, elaborate why.

d) Find the dot product of ⃗a and ⃗b.

e) Find the angle θ between ⃗a and ⃗b. You can leave your answers by means of cosθ or sinθ based
on which vector product method you prefer to use.
f) Find vector ⃗c which is perpendicular to both ⃗a and ⃗b vectors.
g) Find the magnitude of vector ⃗c.
h) Find the angle that ⃗c makes with y-axis.

i) Find the unit vector ĉ that is perpendicular to both ⃗a and ⃗b vectors.

Question 2 (Vectors)
Vector A⃗ = γ(6ı̂ + 8ȷ̂) is given in terms of unit vectors where γ is a constant. Determine the value
of γ that makes A⃗ a unit vector.

Question 3 (Vectors)
Two vectors C ⃗ and D⃗ have magnitudes C = 3 and D = 2, respectively. The resultant vector from
⃗ ×D
their vector product is given as C ⃗ = −2ȷ̂ + 4ı̂. Find the angle (cosθ or sinθ) between C
⃗ and D?

Question 4 (Derivatives & Partial Derivatives)

Calculate the derivatives of the following functions with respect to t

f (t) = βt4 + αt−2

f (t) = t2 /(βt + 3)

f (t) = e2t + tan(t2 + 2)

g(t, x) = sin(xt3 + γt−1 )

g(t, y) = ln(αt + ycos(γt2 ))

g(t, z, x) = zx/sin(t2 − 2)

where the terms α, β and γ are constants.

Question 5 (Integrals)
Calculate indefinite integrals as listed below
Z
2x
√ dx
x2 + 1
Z
2
dt
βt + 1
Z
sin(2y)
dy
sin(y)
Z
1
dt
t2 + 5t + 6
Z
sin3 (θ) dθ
Z
λz
dz
(z 2 + α2 )3/2
where the terms β, α and λ are constants.

Question 6 (Application of definite integral in classical mechanics)

Derive an expression for moment of inertia, I of a uniform rod of a length L and a mass M if the
rod rotates about its left end that is perpendicular to x-axis? (Hint: Consider a continuous sum of
dm elements and use λ = dm/dx when you set up an integral )

Comment: In the following weeks, we will imitate the same methodology to find electric fields, electric
force and electric potential generated by the stationary rigid bodies having uniform or nonuniform
charge distributions.

Good luck!
