Understanding how to
use “could” in English
Today we are going to learn
all about the modal verb
could.
Modal verbs
can, could, may, might, must, should

We call them modal verbs because


they express modality, which refers
to the way in which something is said
in terms of necessity, possibility,
ability, permission, obligation or
probability.
Modal verbs help modify the
meaning of the main verb by adding
attitude or degree of certainty
about an action.

Could - expresses a low to moderate


degree of certainty. It suggests that
something is possible but not
definitive.
Could
Could is a modal verb used
to talk about:
Past abilites;
Possibilities;
Requests
We use “could” to talk about
abilities in the past.
Examples:
When I was five, I could ride a
bike.
She could read when she was
four.
We use “could” to talk about
something that is possible.
Examples:
It could rain later.
This could be the best day
ever!
We use “could” to make polite
requests.
Examples:
Could you hand me a tissue?
Could you lend me a pencil?
Affirmative
Subject + could + main verb
Examples:
She could speak French when she was
young.
We could go to the beach tomorrow.
Negative
Subject + could not/ couldn’t +
main verb
Examples:
I couldn’t swim when I was five.
She couldn’t understand the lesson
yesterday.
Interrogative
Could + subject + main verb

Examples:
Could you help me, please?
Could I have some water?
Exercise: fill in the blanks with the modal verb could
1. When I was a child, I run very fast.
2. you help me with my homework, please?
3. It was so foggy yesterday! I see anything.
4. She dance really well when she was younger.
5. If we leave now, we arrive on time.
6. She tried to solve the math problem, but she
