Lesson 8. Computers in our Daily Life

Activities
1. Cite at least 2 advantages and 2 disadvantages of computers and
explain how they could affect human activities. Rubrics: 10 points
(Organization-5; Content-5)
Advantages of Computers
 Computer helps the user to finish their designated tasks easily
in few seconds.
 It helps the user in better understanding and communication
with other devices.
Disadvantages of Computers
 Computers can be a distraction because of its high
entertainment value.
 Use of computers nowadays increases the numbers of
cybercrimes.
How they could affect human activities
 Computer can make human activities easier and faster, it could
help to lessen our everyday work. On the other hand, it could
also be a threat to us. Improper use of it may lead us to danger.

2. Use an image that shows improper posture in using a computer

and suggest how to correct it. Rubrics: 10 points (Creativity-5;
Accuracy/Content-5)
Improper posture in using a computer
Some ways to correct posture in using computer is to:
Sit with a back straight (no hunching), your shoulders pulled back and
buttock touching the end of the seat.
Keep your neck and head in an upright angle with your ears aligned
with your shoulders. According to studies, tilting the head forward
just 15 degrees (so called “text neck”) doubles the amount of pressure
on your neck as the weight of your head doubles.
Avoid leaning on any side. Keep hips even to distribute weight of
body.
Bend your knees at a 90 degree angle, and keep your knees even with
or slightly lower than hips.
Leave a 2-3 inch small gap between the bottom of your thighs and the
edge of the seat. This helps reduce pressure build up in the underside
of your thighs.
Keep both feet flat on the floor, or rest them on a footrest if you can’t
reach it.
Don’t sit with your legs crossed, which restricts blood flow.
Avoid sitting for longer than 30 minutes at a time.

3. Explain the usage of a binary system? Rubrics: 10 points

(Organization-5; Content-5)
Computers use the binary number system to manipulate and store all
of their data including numbers, words, videos, graphics, and music.
Binary is most well known for being used in computers. Each bit (a
storage module) has two values, it can represent 1 or 0. Binary is used
in computers because it’s the most simple way to store and use data
that we know

4. Differentiate bit and byte. Rubrics: 10 points (Organization-5;

Content-5)

The main difference between bit and byte is the size of the file or the
amount of information it contains. A bit is the smallest unit of
computer memory, and it has the capacity to store a maximum of two
different values. While a byte, which is composed of eight bits, has the
potential to store a maximum of 256 distinct values.

D-Evaluation/Post-test

Identification. Write your answer on the space provided before the item (1
Ergonomics
point each).
1. _____________. It is a science-based discipline that brings together
knowledge from other subjects such as anatomy and physiology,
psychology, engineering, and statistics to ensure that designs
complement the strengths and abilities of people and minimize the
effects of their limitations and instructions to the computer. Examples
are mouse,
Ergonomics printer, speakers, etc.
of using computer

2. _____________.It is the field of study that is concerned with the fit

between people, their equipment, and their work.
Memory
3. ______________.It refers to the capacity of the computer to process and
retrieve information.
4. Random Access Memory
______________. Spell-out the acronym RAM.
5. ______________. It refers to a feeling of anxiety and incapacity
Information Overload
experienced when people are presented with more information than
they can Userhandle.
6. ______________. It refers to the computer operator (people).
7. ______________.
Software It is a set of instructions that makes the computer
perform tasks. In other words, the software tells the computer what to
do. Hardware
8. ______________. It is the mechanical devices that make up the computer
are called hardware. Hardware is any part of the computer you can
touch.Speed
9. ______________. It refers to the function of the computer on how fast it
could produce information.
Computers
10. ______________. It helps us to collect, organize, evaluate, and
communicate information.
Lesson 9. Networks & Wired & Wireless Data

E-Activities:
Rubrics: 10 points each (Organization-5; Content-5)
1. What is the difference between analog and digital technology?

The difference between analog and digital technology is that in analog

technology, information is translated into electric pulses of varying
amplitude. In digital technology, the information is converted into a
number (digits) and displays and stores it.

2. What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of wired and
wireless communication media?

Using wired networks generally transfer data faster compared to

wireless networks. It is much less likely to suffer from interference
than wireless network. It is also much difficult for an unauthorized
user to intercept data. However, wired networks are expensive to
install or configure. The user also can’t instantly move a device from
one location to another as there may not be a network connection
available.
Using wireless networks allows the user to move around freely and
still stay connected. New nodes can easily be added without the
interruption to the network. However, wireless network only has a
limited range. Each wireless access point only has so much bandwidth
to share among connected nodes. The greater the number of nodes
that are connected, the less bandwidth each receives and the slower
communication becomes.
