Dynamic Analysis Tutorial

The document contains tutorial questions for a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) degree in Structural Analysis II at the National University of Science and Technology. It includes various problems related to collapse loads, dynamic properties of structures, free vibration equations, and moment resistance for different structural elements. Each question requires application of engineering principles to determine specific structural responses and loads.

PART III TUTORIAL QUESTIONS - 2012
TCW 3207: STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS I1

QUESTION 1
For the continuous beam shown in the figure below determine the collapse load.

QUESTION 2

For the encastre beam shown below determine the collapse load in terms of plastic moment M p.
QUESTION 3

Determine the value of the load W required to cause collapse of the frame shown .

QUESTION 4

A one storey building is idealized as a rigid girder supported by weightless columns, as shown in Figure
below. In order to evaluate the dynamic properties of this structure, a free-vibration test is made, in which
the roof system (rigid girder) is displaced laterally by a hydraulic jack and then suddenly released. During
the jacking operation, it is observed that a force of 20KN is required to displace the girder 20 mm.. After
the instantaneous release of this initial displacement, the maximum displacement on the first return swing
is only 16mm and the period of this displacement cycle is T = 1:40 sec.

QUESTION 5
Write equation governing the free vibration of the systems shown below.
QUESTION 6
A 8m square corner panel of a reinforced concrete floor slab shown in Figure 4.1 is simply supported on
the outer edge on steel beams, and continuous over the interior beams. The ultimate load is 16 kN/m2.
Determine the required ultimate moment of resistance.

QUESTION 7
2
Determine the uniformly distributed collapse load w kN/m of a square slab (L × L )m, simply
supported at three edges and the other edge is free. Assume M = 2M = 2M.
y x

QUESTION 8
A circular slab of 6 m radius is shown below which is clamped along the circumference and has a
column support at the centre. Determine the yield pattern and uniformly distributed collapse load of
the slab if the positive and negative moments of resistance M and M are 30 kNm/m. Use the method
p n
of virtual work.
