curve?
Abstraction (Critical Thinking) – 55 minutes

Normal Probability Distribution

- A probability distribution of a random
variables. It shows graphical representations
of random variables obtained through
measurement such as the height and weight
of a students. It is sometimes called the
“bell curve”. It is used to describe the
characteristics of population and help us
visualize the inferences we make about the
population.

Characteristics of a Normal Curve

1. The distribution curve is “bell-shaped”.

2. The curve is symmetrical about its center.
This means that, if we draw a segment from
the peak of the curve down to the horizontal
axis, the segment divides the normal curve
into two equal parts or areas.
3. The mean, median, and mode coincide at
the center. This also means that in a normal
distribution, or a distribution described by a
normal curve, the mean, median and mode
are equal.
4. The width of the curve is determined by the
standard deviation of the distribution.
- If the curve of a distribution is too narrow it
means the value of standard deviation is
small.
- But if the curve of a distribution is too wide it
means the value of standard deviation is
large.
5. The tails of the curve are plotted in both
directions and flattened out indefinitely along
the horizontal axis. Always approaching the
axis but never touching it. That is, the curve
is asymptotic (approaches to infinity) to
the base line.
6. The area under the curve is 1. Thus, it
represents the probability or proportion or
the percentage associated with specific
sets of measurement values.

EMPIRICAL RULE

It tells you what percentage of your data falls within

a certain number of standard deviations from the
mean.

1. 68% of the data falls within one standard

deviation of the mean.
2. 95% of the data falls within two standard
deviations of the mean.
3. 99.7% of the data falls within three standard
deviations of the mean.

ACTIVITY: SKETCH ME!

The height of SHS students is normally distributed

with a mean of μ= 150 cm and a standard deviation
of σ= 10 cm. Sketch a normal curve that describes
this distribution.

a. Draw a normal distribution based on the

given values from the problem.
b. Identify what values falls the 68-95-99.7
regions of a normal curve.
Real-World Applications of the Normal
Distribution

1. Psychology 🧠

- In psychology, the normal distribution helps

researchers and professionals understand
human behavior and cognitive abilities.
1.1 IQ Scores:
 Intelligence Quotient (IQ) scores are
normally distributed, with a mean of 100 and
a standard deviation of 15.
 About 68% of people have an IQ between
85 and 115, while very high or very low IQs
are rare.
1.2 Mental Health Assessments
 Psychological test scores (e.g., depression
or anxiety scales) often follow a normal
curve.
 This helps psychologists determine which
scores fall within a typical range and which
may indicate mental health concerns.

1.3 Personality Traits:

 Traits like introversion and extroversion

tend to follow a normal distribution, with
most people falling in the middle and fewer
at the extremes.

2. Finance & Economics 💰📈

- The normal distribution is essential in

financial markets and risk management.

2.1 Stock Market Returns:

 Daily stock price changes and investment

returns often follow a bell-shaped curve,
helping analysts assess risks.

 Understanding standard deviations allows

investors to predict how much a stock price
might fluctuate.

2.2 Risk Management:

 Banks and insurance companies use the

normal distribution to estimate financial
risks, such as the probability of loan
defaults or insurance claims.

2.3 Income Distribution

 In some cases, salaries and household

incomes show a normal pattern, helping
economists analyze wealth inequality and
make policy recommendations.

3. Quality Control & Manufacturing 🏭🔬

- Industries rely on the normal distribution to

ensure product consistency and maintain
high standards.

3.1 Production Quality Control

 Factories measure product dimensions (e.g.,

bottle sizes, phone screen widths) to
ensure they fall within acceptable limits.
 If too many items fall outside the standard
deviation range, it signals a manufacturing
problem.
3.2 Defect Analysis
 Companies analyze defect rates using a
normal curve to determine how many
products meet or fail quality standards.
 If a product defect rate increases beyond
expected levels, adjustments must be made.

- The normal distribution is a powerful tool

that helps professionals predict trends,
analyze data, and improve decision-
making in psychology, finance, and quality
control. Understanding this concept allows
for better assessment of human behavior,
financial risks, and product quality,
leading to improved outcomes in various
industries.

Application (Critical Thinking/Problem Solving) – 25 minutes

Directions: Read the following statements

carefully. Write ND if the statement describes a
characteristic of a normal distribution, and NND if it
does not describe a characteristic of a normal
distribution. Write your answers on a separate sheet
of paper.

1. The curve of the distribution is bell-shaped.

2. In a normal distribution, the mean, median and

mode are of equal values.

3. The normal curve gradually gets closer and

closer to 0 on one side.

4. The curve is symmetrical about the mean.

5. The distance between the two inflection points of

the normal curve is equal to the value of the mean.

6. A normal distribution has a mean that is also

equal to the standard deviation.

7. The two parameters of the normal distribution are

the mean and the standard deviation.

8. The normal curve can be described as

asymptotic.

9. Two standard deviations away from the left and

right of the mean is equal to 68.3%.

” Sketch & Label the Normal Distribution”

Instruction: Draw and label the normal distribution

based on a sample data set individually. Shade and
mark the regions that corresponds to 68-95-99.7
percent.

1. The height of senior high school students follows

a normal distribution with:

 μ = 150 cm

 σ = 10 cm

a. If a student is 175 cm tall, how many standard

deviations from the mean is this?

2. A class of students took a math test, and the

scores follow a normal distribution.

 μ = 75

 σ=5

a. If a student scored 85, how many standard

deviations away from the mean is this?

3. The daily high temperatures (in °C) in a city over

a month follow a normal distribution.

 μ = 30°C

 σ = 3°C

a. If today's temperature is 36°C, what percentage

of days usually fall below this temperature?
