Lecture 16 Flexibility Matrix

The document outlines a course on Structural Analysis and Design-III at Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University, focusing on the flexibility matrix method for analyzing statically indeterminate beams and frames. It details the procedure for using this method, including finding the degree of indeterminacy, selecting redundant forces, and calculating various matrices. Additionally, it provides a problem for students to analyze a beam using the flexibility matrix method as homework.

Flexibility Matrix
• An alternative approach to the solution of statically indeterminate
beams and frames.

• Flexibility matrix method, also known as the method of consistent

deformation or force matrix method

• Flexibility is the inverse property to the stiffness.

• We know that, stiffness is the force (or moment) due to unit displacement.
Flexibility is the displacement caused by the application of unit force.
Flexibility Matrix
Differences between stiffness matrix method and Flexibility matrix Method:
Flexibility Matrix
Procedure to analyze statically indeterminate beam by FM method

1. Find the degree of indeterminacy

2. Select the redundant force Q
3. Replacement of equivalent joint force and Find 𝐴𝑚𝐿
Problem 1
Analyze the following beam using the method of flexibility matrix.
EI is constant
Solution:
Step 1: Degree of indeterminacy
No. of unknown reactions = 4 (Neglecting Horizontal force)
No of equilibrium equations = 2
Degree of indeterminacy = 4 − 2 = 2

Step 2: Selection of Redundant force

We need to consider two redundant force say 𝑄1 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑄2 .
We may take 𝑅𝐵 = 𝑄1 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑅𝐶 = 𝑄2
Step 3: Calculation of Fixed End Moment and Support reactions

Step 4: Release structure and Replacement of equivalent joint force

(1)
Step 5: Reaction matrix for ext. load in released structure (𝐴𝑚𝐿 )

(Upward +ve and Clock +ve)

Step 6: Application of unit loads in the direction of redundant individually

Step 7: Reaction matrix for unit load in released structure (𝐴𝑚𝑢 )

(Upward +ve and Clock +ve)

Step 6: Application of unit loads in the direction of redundant individually

Step 8: Flexibility coefficient matrix

Step 9: Flexibility matrix

Step 10: Deflection matrix in released structure

Step 11: Evaluation of redundant force We know that

Step 12: Reaction matrix of fixed support
