INTRODUCTION

A transformer is an electrical device that transfers electrical energy between

circuits through electromagnetic induction. It is primarily used to step up or
step down voltage levels, enabling efficient power transmission and utilization.
Transformers come in various designs and sizes, from massive units in
substations to small components in electronic circuits.
TYPES OF TRANSFORMERS

Transformers are broadly classified based on their applications and

functionalities.

A. Power Transformers
Power transformers are used in transmission networks for stepping up or
stepping down voltage levels.
 Step-Up Transformers: Increase voltage for long-distance power
transmission.
 Step-Down Transformers: Reduce voltage for distribution to
homes and businesses.
B. Distribution Transformers
Distribution transformers provide the final voltage transformation in the
electric power distribution system, supplying voltage appropriate for
consumer use.
C. Isolation Transformers
These transformers isolate circuits for safety and prevent electrical noise
transmission.
D. Instrument Transformer
Used in metering and protection systems, they include:
1. Current Transformers (CT): Measure high current levels.
2. Potential Transformers (PT): Measure high voltage levels.

E. Special-Purpose Transformers
These include auto-transformers, furnace transformers, and welding
transformers, designed for specific industrial tasks.
