2. The point under the ground where earthquake begins is called
focus.
3. The instrument used to measure an earthquake is seismograph .
4. Volcanoes that have stopped erupting are called extinct volcanoes.
5. Floods are caused due to heavy rains.
6. When an earthquake takes place under the ocean it causes
Tsunami.

Defines
1. Vibrations – Continuous and rapid to and fro movements.
2. Avalanche – Large mass of snow falling down a mountain.
3. Landslide- A large mass of earth or rocks falling rapidly down a
mountain.
4. Scarcity – Shortage .

Short Question/Answer
1 What is a natural calamity?
Ans. The calamities that are
associated with natural factors
are called natural calamities .

2. What is magma?
Ans. The hot molten rock inside the earth is called magma.

3. Name any two active and two dormant volcanoes.

Ans. Two active volcanoes are Mount Fuji and Mount Etna.
Two dormant volcanoes are Mount kea and Mount Kilimanjaro.

4. Give one measure that can prevent both floods and drought.
Ans. Planting more and more trees.

Long Question/Answer

1. What is an earthquake? What damage does an earthquake cause?

Ans. An earthquake is a sudden shaking of the earth’s crust caused by
vibrations or movements occurring deep inside the earth. Damage
caused by an earthquake –
a) Destruction of life, houses and buildings, roads and rail networks.
b) Dams and bridges may be destroyed.
c) It can give rise to other disasters like avalanche, landslides,
tsunami etc.
2 What is volcano? Explain the types of volcanoes.
Ans. An opening in the earth’s surface which allows hot liquid rock
(magma), gases and ash to come out from below the surface of the earth is
called volcano.
There are three types of volcanoes:-
a) Active volcano – Volcanoes that may erupt anytime or have
erupted in the recent past.
b) Dormant volcano – Volcanoes that have not erupted for a very
long time but may erupt in the future.
c) Extinct volcano – Volcanoes which have stopped erupting.

3 What is tsunami? How is it caused?

Ans. A tsunami is a series of huge waves caused either by an earthquake, a
volcanic eruption or any other disturbance under the sea or ocean.

4 What is the role of people during a natural calamity?

Ans. When a natural calamity occurs, we should do the following:

b) Help people.
c) Contribute cash, food and clothes for affected people.
d) Do not spread rumours.
e) Do not get panic.

5 Differentiate between the following:

When it rains heavily and continuously for several days the river
overflow and submerge the nearby areas this condition is called flood. If a
particular area receives no rain or less rain than normal for a long period of
time, it is said to be affected by drought.
b) Focus and epicentre
The point below the earth’s crust where the earthquake starts is
called the focus. The point on the surface of earth just above the
focus is called epicentre.

Give Reasons
1. How can trees prevent both floods and drought?
Ans. Trees can soak up excess of water preventing run – offs and
damage caused by floods. By releasing water in the dry season, they also help
in preventing calamities like droughts. In this way they prevent both floods
and droughts.
