Includes: Garbage, refuse, sludge, and discarded materials from industrial, commercial, mining,
agricultural, and community activities.

Excludes: Domestic sewage, dissolved pollutants in water resources, industrial wastewater

effluents, and irrigation return flows.

Forms: Not limited to physical solids; can be liquid, semi-solid, or contained gaseous materials.

Categories of wastes on the basis of sources

• Municipal

• Industrial

• Medical

• Agriculture

• Construction and demolition

• Hazardous

• Radioactive

• Mining

• e-Waste

• Universal

Classification of Wastes

• Solid waste: vegetable waste, kitchen waste, household waste etc.

• E-waste: discarded electronic devices like computer, TV, music systems etc.

• Plastic waste- plastic bags, bottles, buckets etc.

• Metal waste- unused metal sheet, metal scraps etc.

• Nuclear waste- unused materials from nuclear power plants

• Universal waste are generated universally by various facilities but present limited
hazardous ( It is exempted from the hazardous regulation, but managed separately from
trash.
Physical Composition of municipal solid waste
Challenges Faced in Waste Management

• Rapid urbanization: Urban areas with 377 million people generate about 62 million tons of
solid waste every year.

• E-waste is also a growing concern

• Lack of adequate garbage collection infrastructure

• Sorting recyclable materials only about 30% of waste is properly sorted, rest end up in
landfills instead of being recycled.

Solutions to Waste Management

 Scientific Studies & Planning: Analyze waste types, costs, and ideal disposal sites.
 Innovative Technologies: Enhance recycling infrastructure.
 Improved Waste Collection: Use IoT, AI & ML for efficient collection.
 Formal-Informal Sector Integration: Promote decentralized waste management and
recycling.
 Organic Waste Treatment: Composting & bio-methanation reduce landfill waste.
 Sanitary Landfills: Convert dumps with proper funding and design.
 Technology Integration: RFID monitoring & GPS tracking for efficiency.
 Waste Treatment Facilities: Encourage public-private partnerships.
 Public Awareness & Regulations: Educate people and enforce rules strictly.
