Introduction
The purpose of creating this portfolio is to showcase the many facets of mathematics.
Often perceived as a series of abstract concepts and formulas, mathematics is far more
than a subject studied in school; it is a fundamental part of our daily lives. From the
symmetry in nature to the patterns in music, mathematics can be found all around us.
By understanding mathematics, we can gain deeper insights into the world. For
example, when we comprehend the geometry behind architectural structures or the
statistics that inform public policies, we see how mathematics helps to shape and
explain our environment.
This portfolio illustrates my journey with mathematics, exploring various captivating
topics and demonstrating their relevance to the real world. Through this exploration, I
aim to highlight how mathematics is not only practical but also innovative and inspiring.
Whether it's through solving everyday problems, understanding natural phenomena, or
advancing technology, the beauty and utility of mathematics are evident.
Self Reflection
The author has always enjoyed math, particularly through numbers, calculations, and pattern identification.
They have identified their strengths in fast calculations, quick grasp of concepts, and accurate
interpretation of questions. However, they also have weaknesses, such as making careless errors, such as
misreading numbers or skipping steps in calculations. To overcome these, they need to slow down and
double-check their work. They also recognize the need for more practice to reinforce their understanding
and improve their skills. By dedicating more time to practicing different problems, they aim to minimize
mistakes and become more proficient in applying mathematical techniques. Through self-reflection, they
aim to become a more skilled and confident mathematician.
Problem-solving Showcase
Mathematics is best understood through problem-solving. Here are some examples showcasing different mathematical concepts and
techniques:
Example 1: Algebraic Equations
Problem: Solve 2x+5=172x + 5 = 172x+5=17. Solution:
1. Subtract 5: 2x=122x = 122x=12.
2. Divide by 2: x=6x = 6x=6.
Example 2: Geometry
Problem: Find the area of a triangle with a base of 10 units and a height of 5 units. Solution:
1. Use the formula: Area=12×base×height\text{Area} = \frac{1}{2} \times \text{base} \times \text{height}Area=21×base×height.
2. Calculate: Area=25\text{Area} = 25Area=25 square units.
Example 3: Probability
Problem: What is the probability of rolling a sum of 7 with two six-sided dice? Solution:
1. Favorable outcomes: 6.
2. Total outcomes: 36.
3. Probability: 636=16\frac{6}{36} = \frac{1}{6}366=61.
Example 4: Calculus
Problem: Find the derivative of f(x)=x2+3x+2f(x) = x^2 + 3x + 2f(x)=x2+3x+2. Solution:
1. Apply the power rule: f′(x)=2x+3f'(x) = 2x + 3f′(x)=2x+3.
These examples demonstrate the practical applications of algebra, geometry, probability, and calculus in solving real-world problems.
Mathematical Connections
Mathematics is deeply connected to various disciplines, enhancing our
understanding and driving progress. In science, math describes natural laws and
analyzes data. Technology relies on algorithms, cryptography, and data
processing, all rooted in mathematical principles. Engineering uses math to
design and build structures and systems. In art, geometry and the Golden Ratio
create visually pleasing compositions, while fractal geometry inspires digital art.
Music uses mathematical patterns in rhythms, scales, and harmonies. Economics
employs calculus, statistics, and game theory to analyze data and model
economic behavior. These connections show how math enriches and integrates
into diverse fields, making it a versatile and vital tool.
Conclusion
This portfolio has deepened my appreciation for mathematics and its
applications across various fields. I've showcased problem-solving skills and
highlighted how math is interconnected with science, technology, engineering,
art, music, and economics.
Challenges included balancing detail and brevity. However, this project has
reinforced the importance of mathematics in my future endeavors, whether in
STEM fields, technology, or creative pursuits.
In summary, this portfolio has not only showcased my skills but also underscored
the versatility and significance of mathematics in our world, inspiring me to
continue exploring its potential.
