14. An electric dipole of length 2 cm is placed with its axis making an angle of 60 0 with respect to
uniform electric field of 105 N/C. If it experiences a torque of 8√3 Nm, calculate the magnitude
of charge on the dipole.
15. Depict the orientation of the dipole in (a) stable , (b) unstable equilibrium in a uniform electric
field.
16. A concave lens of refractive index 1.5 is immersed in a medium of refractive index 1.65. What is
the nature of the lens?
17. Two identical conducting balls A and B have charges –Q and +3Q respectively. They are brought
in contact with each other and then separated by a distance d apart. Find the magnitude and
nature of the Coulomb force between them.
18. A metallic spherical shell has an inner radius R1 and outer radius R2. A charge Q is placed at the
centre of the spherical cavity. What will be surface charge density on (i) the inner surface, and
(ii) the outer surface?
19. Draw the energy band diagram of a p-type and n-type semiconductors at temperature T>0K,
depicting the donor and acceptor energy levels.
20. The power factor of an ac circuit is 0.5. What is the phase difference between voltage and
current in this curcuit?
21. Draw the diagram to show the behaviour of plane wavefronts as they (a) pass through a thin
prism and (b) pass through a thin convex lens.
22. An electron is revolving around the nucleus in a circular orbit with a speed of 10 7 m/s. If the
radius of the orbit is 10-10m, find the current constituted by the revolving electron in the orbit.
23. Differentiate between conduction current and displacement current.
24. How are electromagnetic waves produced? Write any two important properties of
electromagnetic waves.
25. Define the terms (i) drift velocity and (ii) relaxation time.

26. State Gauss law of electrostatics. Two large thin metallic plates are placed close to each other.
The plates have surface charge densities of opposite signs and the magnitude is 2x10 -12C/m2.
Calculate the electric field intensities i)in the outer region of the plates ii) on the interior region
between the plates.

27. Derive the spherical mirror formula for a concave mirror producing real image.
28. Obtain the expression for self inductance of two mutually coaxial solenoids.
29. The radius of innermost electron orbit of a hydrogen atom is 5.3x10-11m. What is the radius of
the n=2 and n=3. What is excitation potential?
30. Calculate the binding energy per nucleon (in MeV) of nitrogen nucleus( 44Ca20). Given
m(44Ca20) = 43.95548 u
mp = 1.007825 u
mn = 1.008665 u
31. The magnetic susceptibility of a magnetic material is -1. Identify the material. What are hard and
soft ferromagnets?
32. Two monochromatic waves propagating in the same direction with amplitudes A and 3A
respectively and differing in phase by π/3 superpose, calculate the amplitude of the resultant
wave. Write the condition for constructive and destructive interference of light.
33. Discuss the behaviour of dipole in non uniform electric field.
34. Derive the relation D= i+e-A, where the symbols have usual meaning.
35. Write the expression for potential energy of a magnetic dipole placed in a uniform magnetic
field. Under what condition the dipole is in stable and unstable equilibrium.
36. Two cells of emfϵ 1 and ϵ 2 and internal resistance r 1 and r 2 respectively are connected as shown
in the circuit. Obtain an expression for equivalent emf ϵ eq and equivalent internal resistance r eq .

37. Draw a labelled diagram of a moving coil galvanometer. Show that in a radial magnetic field, the
deflection of the coil is directly proportional to the current flowing in the coil. 2+3=5
38. A series LCR circuit is connected to an ac source. Using the phasor diagram, derive the
expression for the impedance of the circuit. Plot a graph to show the variation of current with
frequency of the ac source. 3+2=5
39. What is interference of light? Write two essential conditions for sustained interference pattern
to be produced on the screen. What is the effect on the interference pattern in YDSE when (i)
screen is moved closure to the plane of slits? (ii) separation between two slits is increased?

40. Draw a circuit diagram showing balancing of Wheatstone bridge. Use Kirchhoff’s rule to obtain
the balance condition in terms of the resistances of four arms of Wheatstone bridge. 1+4=5
41. Calculate the potential at a point P due to a charge of 4x10-7C located 9cm away. Hence obtain
the work done in bringing a charge of 2x10-9C from infinity to the point P. Does the answer
depend on the path along which the charge is brought? 2+2+1=5
