PIECEWISE FUNCTION
The domain is a set of real numbers. Considering:the interval [𝟎,∞) we have 𝒇(𝒙)=𝒙 ;the
interval (-∞,𝟎], we have 𝒇(𝒙)=−𝒙.Hence, all the function values are nonnegative. The
range of the function is the set of nonnegative real numbers, which we can write as
{𝒚:𝒚≥𝟎}.
EXAMPLE:
1. You are a bagger in a particular supermarket. Daily, you receive four hundred pesos
for the first six hours you will work, and fifty pesos per hour for every exceeding time.
Give the function model representing the income you will receive daily.
2. A tricycle ride costs Thirty pesos for the first four kilometers, and each additional
integer kilometer adds ten pesos to the fare. Use a function to represent fare in terms of
the distance d in kilometers.
3. A videoke machine can be rented for five hundred pesos for a day, but for the
exceeding days, an additional cost of three hundred per day is added. Represent the
cost of renting a videoke machine as a function of the number of days it is rented.
TRY THIS:
A photocopy shop charges P2.00 per photocopy for orders of 20 or fewer photocopies,
P1.50 per photocopy for orders of 50 or fewer but more than 20 photocopies , and
P1.00 per photocopy orders of more than 50 photocopies.Identify the piecewise function
which models this situation.Sketch the graph
