Grinding Machine
Learning Objectives • At the end of session student must be familiar with; – Concept of Grinding – Grinding machine & its uses – Operations performed on grinding machine Grinding Machine
• A machine tool used for grinding, called as Grinding Machine
• Grinding is a process to finish the work piece that must show high surface quality • A power driven abrasive wheel called as Grinder • Each grain of abrasive on the wheel's surface cuts a small chip from the work piece via shear deformation, which generates the heat • Coolant is used to cool the work piece so that it does not overheat and go outside its tolerance • The coolant also benefits the machinist as the heat generated may cause burns in some cases. • Grinder Material: Abrasive compound of Aluminum oxide, Silicon carbide, Ceramics. • They are classified as bench grinder, surface grinder, cylindrical grinder. Surface Grinder • To smooth the flat surface of metallic or nonmetallic materials, to give them a more refined look or to attain a desired surface for a functional purpose. • The surface grinder is composed of an abrasive wheel, a work holding device, chuck & a reciprocating table. • The work table holds the material in place while it is being worked on. Cylindrical Grinder • Work on a variety of shapes (Cylindrical, Elliptical, Cam etc), provided object must have a central axis of rotation. • Cylindrical grinding is defined with four essential actions: – The work must be constantly rotating – The grinding wheel must be constantly rotating – The grinding wheel is fed towards and away from the work – Either the work or the grinding wheel is traversed with the respect to the other Centerless Grinder • Work piece is held between: – Grinding wheel – Regulating wheel – Work holding platform • Grinding wheel is stationary [not moving] & rotates such that the force applied to the work piece is directed downward, against the work holding platform • Both wheels are rotating in the same direction, but at different speeds Centerless Grinder • Regulating wheel, is movable. • Is positioned to apply lateral pressure to the work piece, & usually has either a very abrasive to trap the work piece. • The speed of the two wheels relative to each other provides the grinding action & determines the material removal rate • During operation the work piece turns with the Regulating wheel, with the same linear velocity at the point of contact and without slipping.
