1.4 Types of Libraries
There are many types which will cater to the needs of particular groups of people or particular
segments of society. Each individual library should reflect the environment within which it is
located.
● Virtual Library – Virtual libraries are organised collections of digital information. They
are constructed collections organised for a particular community of users and they are
designed to support the information needs of that community. Virtual libraries can offer
resources from many resources and in many formats including audio visual. The items in
these virtual collections do not have to reside on one server but they share a common
interface to assist the user in accessing the collection. The emphasis in virtual libraries is
on organisation and access, not on physical collections.
● Public Library – Public libraries serve communities of all sizes and types. Within the
public library system there are various types of libraries with each serving a particular
purpose.
● National Library – Oversees the administration of all the libraries in the country (Central,
Branch and Mobile). It is normally funded by the government and has copies of all the
books and other published material of that country.
● Central Library – Usually located in the major cities and oversees the smaller branch
libraries.
● Branch Library – Located in smaller towns or villages. They serve a specific geographic
area and are accountable to the Central Library.
● Mobile Library – These are specially adapted vehicles that take library resources to rural
areas at a specified time every three weeks
● Academic Library – An academic library serves an academic or research oriented
community e.g. a college or a university. It is a post secondary institution that provides
the following:
o An organized collection of printed or other materials, or a combination thereof
o A staff trained to provide and interpret such materials as required to meet the
informational, cultural, recreational, or educational needs of clientele
o An established schedule in which services of the staff are available to clientele
o The physical facilities necessary to support such a collection, staff and schedule.
● School Library – A school library (or a School Library Media Centre), is a library within
a school where students, staff have access to a variety of resources. The goal of the
school library media centre is to ensure that all members of the school community have
equitable access “to books and reading, to information, and to information technology.”
A school library media centre “uses all types of media...is automated, and utilizes the
Internet (as well as books) for information gathering. The SLMC integrates its functions
and services into the school’s curricular and extracurricular activities and supports the
overall aims and objectives of the school.
