Determining-Probability 082733

The document outlines various probability notations related to z-values, including the probabilities of z falling within certain ranges and the interpretation of these probabilities. It provides examples of calculations for specific z-value scenarios, such as finding areas between z-values and the proportion of areas below or above certain z-values. Additionally, it lists several tasks for finding probabilities corresponding to given z-values.

Probability Notations:

➢ P(a < z < b) - stating the probability that the z-value is

between a and b.
➢ P(z > a) - stating the probability that the z-value is above a.
➢ P(z < a) - stating the probability that the z-value is below a.
➢ P(z = a) = 0 - stating the probability that the z-value is equal to a
is 0. This notation indicates that a z-value is equal to exactly one
point on the curve.
Familiarize some of the terms involved in using notations.

Negative P(z < a) Positive P(z > a)

“less than z” “greater than z”
“to the left of z” “to the right of z”
“below z” “above z”
“lower than” “more than z”
“under z” “at least z”
“at most z” “at the top of z”
“at the bottom of z”
1. Find the proportion of the area between z = 2 and z = 3.

Solution:
a) b) z = 2 0.4772
z=3 0.4987

c) P(2 < z < 3) = 0.4987 – 0.4772 = 0.0215

Therefore, the area between z = 2 and z = 3 is 0.0215.

2. Find the proportion of the area below z = 1.

Solution:

a) b) z = 1 0.3413

c) P(z < 1) = 0.5000 + 0.3413 = 0.8413

Therefore, the proportion of the area below z = 1 is 0.8413.

3. Find the probability of the area to the right of z = 0.9.

Solution:

a) b) z = 0.9 0.3159

c) P(z > 0.9) = 0.5000 - 0.3159 = 0.1841

Therefore, the probability of the area to the right of z = 0.9 is 0.1841.

4. Find the area that the z-value is exactly equal to -1.5.

Solution:

a)

b) P(z = -1.5) = 0

Therefore, the area exactly z = -1.5 is 0.
