Experiment 0A

The document outlines a short lab experiment to ensure the installation of MultiSim software. It includes step-by-step instructions for creating a simple circuit with an LED, resistor, switch, and power source, along with tasks for reporting results. Students are required to submit a brief report with images of their circuit and answers to specific questions regarding the circuit design.

Experiment 0 A

Objectives: This lab is a very short one to make sure you have installed MultiSim.
Tasks:
Note 0: Before leaving the lab session check off with me so I can check your work and give
you a checkmark in my Excel sheet.
Note 1: Keep the report very short. Though I am asking for a short report, all reports need
to have the construction of a scientific paper with a short introduction and a conclusion.
Please share your project files along with the report.

Step 1:
Download and Install MultiSim from the following link:
https://www.ni.com/en-us/support/downloads/software-products/
download.multisim.html#312060
Note 2: The serial code for the student version is included on my “Getting started” module
on BeachBoard.
Note 3: If you have a MacBook with virtual windows you can read about your options here:
https://knowledge.ni.com/KnowledgeArticleDetails?id=kA00Z0000019QhDSAU&l=en-US
Step 2:
Make the following circuit in Multisim, If you have previous experience with Multisim jump
to “step 2 outcomes” otherwise see below for detailed instructions (Note4: If you are
working with MultiSim Live, I do have a picture of MultiSim live at the end of this
document):

Fig 1
Detailed instructions:
From the toolbar choose: Place -> Component and place:
a) LED (Any color would be fine, Fig 2),
Fig 2
b) 12V Voltage “DC_POWER” Source and “GROUND” (Fig 3). Note that for the voltage
source, I have changed the Tab named “Data Source” group from “All Group” to “Sources”.
You can try searching for the components in the search bar.
c) A Switch (Fig 4).
Fig 3

Fig 4
As the last component look for “Resistor” Family and put a 330 ohm resistor and
then use Place-> Wire, to wire up your circuit. Note that all component values and
specifications can be changed by double-clicking on them.
Step 2 Outcomes:

a-Push the play button in the toolbar, the LED should be illuminated. Report Task:
Show a picture of your circuit in your report with LED ON.
b- Report Task: Answer the following question in your report: Why have we included a
resistor in the circuit? Observe what happens if you increase the resistor amount to 5k ohm
(Note 5: You can change the resistor value by double clicking on it.). Answer this question
in your report.
Step 3:
This LED was set up to be illuminated if it gets connected to the positive side of the power
supply. Redesign the circuit so we see the LED illuminated if we connect ground to the LED
using a switch, in other words, have the power supply to be constantly connected to the
LED and use the switch to provide the ground to the LED.
Step 3 Outcomes:
Report Task: Include a picture of the new circuit in your report.
