Sub: Digital Comunication Assignment-4

Last Date of submission: 04-05-2022

Problem 1
The signal component of a coherent PSK system is defined by

𝑠(𝑡) = 𝐴𝑐 ksin(2𝜋𝑓𝑐 𝑡) + 𝐴𝑐 √1 − 𝑘 2 cos (2𝜋𝑓𝑐 𝑡)

Where 0 ≤t ≤ Tb, and the plus sign corresponds to symbol 1 and the minus sign corresponds to
symbol 0. The first term represents a carrier component included for the purpose of
synchronizing the receiver to the transmitter.

(a) Draw a signal-space diagram for the scheme described here; what observations can you
make about this diagram?

(b) Show that, in the presence of additive white Gaussian noise of zero mean and power spectral
density N0/2, the average probability of error is

1 𝐸𝑏
𝑃𝑒 = 𝑒𝑟𝑓𝑐(√ (1 − 𝑘 2 ))
2 𝑁0

Where

1 2
𝐸𝑏 = 𝐴 𝑇
2 𝐶 𝑏
(c) Suppose that 10 percent of the transmitted signal power is allocated to the carrier
component. Determine the Eb/N0 required to realize a probability of error equal to 10-4.

(d) Compare this value of Eb/N0 with that required for a conventional PSK system with the
same probability of error.

Problem 2

Two passband data transmission systems are to be compared. One system uses 16-PSK and the
other uses 16-QAM. Both systems are required to produce an average probability of symbol
error equal to 10-3. Compare the signal-to-noise ratio requirements of these two systems.

Problem 3

An FSK system transmits binary data at the rate of 2.5 * 106 bits per second. During the course
of transmission, white Gaussian noise of zero mean and power spectral density 10-20 W/Hz is
added to the signal. In the absence of noise, the amplitude of the received sinusoidal wave for
digit 1 or 0 is 1 m V. Determine the average probability of symbol error for the following
system configurations:
(a) Coherent binary FSK

(b) Coherent MSK

(c) Non-coherent binary FSK

Problem 4

(a) In a coherent FSK system, the signals 𝑠1 (𝑡) 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑠2 (𝑡) representing symbols 1 and 0,
respectively, are defined by
∆𝑓
𝑠1 (𝑡), 𝑠2 (𝑡) = 𝐴𝑐 cos [2𝜋(𝑓𝑐 ± )𝑡], 0 ≤ 𝑡 ≤ 𝑇𝑏
2

Assuming that 𝑓𝑐 > ∆f show that the correlation coefficient of the signals s1(t) and s2(t) is
approximately given by
𝑇
𝑏
∫0 𝑠1 (𝑡)𝑠2 (𝑡)𝑑𝑡
𝜌= 𝑇 ≈ 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑐(2∆𝑓𝑇𝑏 )
∫0 𝑠12 (𝑡)𝑑𝑡
𝑏

(b) What is the minimum value of frequency shift ∆𝑓 for which the signals s1(t) and s2(t)
are orthogonal?

(c) What is the value of ∆f that minimizes the average probability of symbol error?

(d) For the value of ∆f obtained in part (c), determine the increase in Eb/N0 required so that
this coherent FSK system has the same noise performance as a coherent binary PSK system.

Problem 5

A voice-band telephone channel has a passband characteristic in the frequency range 300 Hz < f <
3000 Hz. Assume that the channel has an ideal frequency response characteristic in this band.
(a) Select a symbol rate and a power-efficient constellation size to achieve 9.6 kbps signal
transmission. Select the modulation scheme as well and draw the constellation diagram.
(b) If a square-root raised cosine spectrum pulse is used for the transmitter pulse, select the roll-off
factor.

Problem 6

Express the minimum probability of error, P[e]min, in terms of Q(α) when the signal set given
in Figure 1 is used to communicate one of eight equally likely messages over a channel
disturbed by additive white Gaussian noise with power spectral density N0/2.
