Comprehensive Class Notes

Graphs and Functions

Types of Graphs
● Linear Graphs: Straight-line graphs that follow the equation y=mx+cy = mx +
cy=mx+c, where:
○ mmm is the gradient (steepness).
○ ccc is the y-intercept (starting point on the y-axis).
● Quadratic Graphs: U-shaped curves (parabolas) represented by y=ax2+bx+cy =
ax^2 + bx + cy=ax2+bx+c.
● Real-life Graphs: Distance-time graphs and speed-time graphs used in physics
and motion analysis.

Steps to Plot a Graph

1. Choose x-values and substitute them into the equation.
2. Calculate y-values for each x-value.
3. Plot the points on the coordinate plane.
4. Draw the line or curve connecting the points smoothly.

Example: Plotting a Linear Graph

Given y=2x+1y = 2x + 1y=2x+1, find values for x = -2, 0, 2

● When x=−2x = -2x=−2, y=2(−2)+1=−3y = 2(-2) + 1 = -

3y=2(−2)+1=−3
● When x=0x = 0x=0, y=2(0)+1=1y = 2(0) + 1 = 1y=2(0)+1=1
● When x=2x = 2x=2, y=2(2)+1=5y = 2(2) + 1 = 5y=2(2)+1=5

Plot the points (-2, -3), (0,1), and (2,5), then draw a straight line through them.
