Key Attributes of Quadratics

The document explains the key attributes of quadratic functions, including their standard form, characteristics of their graphs (parabolas), and the effects of coefficients 'a' and 'c' on the graph's shape and position. It provides exercises for identifying the domain, range, axis of symmetry, and vertex of various quadratic equations, as well as determining whether they have maximum or minimum values. Additionally, it includes instructions for graphing and analyzing quadratic functions.

Key Attributes of Quadratics 𝑦 = 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐

Vocabulary
 A quadratic function is a nonlinear function that can be written in the standard form
𝑦 = 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 where 𝑎 ≠ 0.
 Every quadratic function has a U-shaped graph called a parabola.
 The most basic quadratic function in the family of quadratic functions, called the parent
quadratic function, is 𝑦 = 𝑥 2 .
 The lowest or highest point on a parabola is the vertex.
 The line that passes through the vertex and divides the parabola into two symmetric
parts is called the axis of symmetry.

Standard Form: 𝑦 = 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐

Effects of “a”
Open a graphs page, graph the parent function in 𝑓1(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 , then graph the function 𝑦 = 𝑎 ∗ 𝑥 2 in 𝑓2(𝑥) to
create a slider and decide what “a” does to the graph of a quadratic. Press /b, choose settings and change
step size to 0.25. Choose OK. Using your left and right arrows, move the slider and decide what happens to
“a” in each case below.
if |𝑎| > 1

if 0 < |𝑎| < 1

if 𝑎 < 0

 If 𝑎 is positive – opens ________ & has a ______________ value

o ______________ is the y-value of the vertex when the parabola opens __________
 If 𝑎 is negative – opens _________ & has a ______________ value
o ______________ is the y-value of the vertex when the parabola opens __________

You can also press /b, then choose animate and the slider will move through all possible values of “a”
while the graph changes accordingly.

Effects of “c”
Open another graphs page. Graph the parent function in 𝑓1(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 , then graph 𝑓2(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 + 𝑐 to create a
slider and decide what “c” does to the graph of a quadratic. Press /b – settings, step size=0.25, style =
vertical. Use your up/down arrows to decide what “c” does to the graph of the quadratic.
If 𝑐 > 0 -

If 𝑐 < 0 -

(0, 𝑐) = _________________

−𝑏
axis of symmetry: 𝑥 = : ALWAYS written as a line (equation), not a value. If there is no “b” term, then
2𝑎
the axis of symmetry will always be x=0.
−𝑏
vertex: ( , 𝑦) - where the y is the _________________ value – you can also find x then plug it into the
2𝑎
equation to find y
Identify the domain and range, axis of symmetry and vertex.

Find the axis of symmetry (aos) and the vertex of the graph of the function.

6. 𝑦 = 2𝑥 2 − 8𝑥 + 6

7. 𝑦 = 6𝑥 2 + 6𝑥
Tell whether the function has a minimum value or maximum value. Then find the minimum or maximum
value.

8. 𝑓(𝑥) = −5𝑥 2 + 7

9. 𝑓(𝑥) = 2𝑥 2 − 𝑥 + 10

Analyze the graph of the function. Find and label the vertex, axis of symmetry and y-intercept. Determine if
the quadratic opens up or down, has a maximum or minimum, and what that value is. Determine the domain
and range for each.
