Fluid Mechanics Assignment 02

The document contains an assignment for a Civil Engineering course on Elementary Fluid Mechanics, detailing three problems related to pressure measurement using manometers. Each problem is followed by a solution that includes calculations for specific gravities, densities, and pressure heads. The final results indicate the pressures of oil in the pipeline for each scenario, with values of 15.7 KPa, 23.74 KPa, and a pressure difference of 1.28m between two points.

ASSIGNMENT 2

DATE: 3rd JULY,2024

QUESTIONS

1. A simple manometer is used to measure the pressure of

oil (sp. Gravity = 0.8) flowing in a pipeline. Its right limb is
open to the atmosphere and the left limb is connected to
the pipe. The centre of pipe is 90mm below the level of
mercury (sp. Gravity = 13.6) in the right limb. If the
difference of mercury levels in the two limbs is 150mm,
find the pressure of oil in pipe.

ASSIGNMENT 2

2. The pressure of water flowing in a pipeline is measured

by a manometer containing U-tubes as shown in figure.
The measuring fluid is mercury in all the tubes and water
is enclosed between the mercury columns. The last tube is
open to the atmosphere. Find the pressure of oil in the
pipeline.

ASSIGNMENT 2

3. A differential manometer connected at the two points A

and B at the same level in a pipe containing an oil of Sp.
Gravity 0.8, shows a difference in mercury levels as
100mm. Determine the difference in pressures at the two
points.

ANSWERS

DATA

1. Specific Gravity, S1 = 0.8

Specific Gravity,S2 = 13.6
Pressure head of pipe, h = ?
Pressure head of oil,h1 = h−¿h2 = (0.15−¿
0.09)m = 0.06m
Pressure head of mercury,h2 = 150mm =
0.15m

ASSIGNMENT 2

Solution

density of oil( ρ)
S1 = density of water ( ρ) (density of water = 1000
kg/m3)
From the above, make density of oil the
subject.
Density of oil= S1 x density of water
= 0.8 x 1000
= 800 kg/m3

P
h= γ , where P= Pressure, γ =Specific Weight
Making pressure the subject,
P=hx
but γ = ρ x g (g= acceleration due to gravity)
γ

γ = 800 × 9.81
= 7848 N/m3

Using the equation, h = S2h2−¿S1h1

h = (13.6×0.15) −¿ (0.8×0.06)
=1.992m = 2m
5|Page
ASSIGNMENT 2

P=2 × 7848
= 15.7 KPa

∴ the pressure of oil in the pipe is 15.7 KPa.

DATA

2. Specific Gravity, S1 = 1
Specific Gravity,S2 = 13.6
Pressure head, h = ?
Pressure head of oil,h1 = 300m = 0.3m
Pressure head of mercury,h2 = 200m =
0.2m

ASSIGNMENT 2

Solution

density of oil( ρ)
S1 = density of water ( ρ) (density of water = 1000
kg/m3)
From the above, make density of oil the
subject.
Density of oil= S1 x density of water
= 1 x 1000
= 1000 kg/m3

P
h= γ , where P= Pressure, γ =Specific Weight
Making pressure the subject,
P=hx
but γ = ρ x g (g= acceleration due to gravity)
γ

γ = 1000 × 9.81
= 9810 N/m3

7|Page
ASSIGNMENT 2

Using the equation, h = S2h2−¿S1h1

h = (13.6×0.2) −¿ (1×0.3)
=2.42m

P = 2.42 × 9810
= 23.74 KPa

∴ the pressure of oil in the pipe is 23.74 KPa

DATA

3. Specific Gravity, S1 = 0.8

Specific Gravity,S2 = 13.6
Pressure head of pipe at A, ha = ?
Pressure head of pipe at B, hb = ?
Pressure head of oil,H = ?

8|Page
ASSIGNMENT 2

Pressure head of mercury,h = 100m = 0.1m

Solution

Pressure head at pipe A,

=ha+S1(H+h)
=ha+0.8(H+0.1)
=ha+0.8H+0.08

Pressure head at pipe B,

=hb+S1H+S2h
=hb+0.8H+13.6(0.1)
=hb+0.8H+1.36

Equating the pressure head of pipe A and B,

ha+0.8H+0.08 = hb+0.8H+1.36
ha−¿hb = 1.36−¿0.08
ha−¿hb = 1.28m

ASSIGNMENT 2

∴the difference in pressures at the two points

is 1.28m
