Two Days Workshop

8th & 13th August 2019

On August 8th and August 13th 2019, Twirl tack technologies solutions
hosted a full day workshop entitled Internet Of Things(IOT). Mr.Kishor,
Associate Engineer in Twirltack solutions demonstrated briefly about
Arduino at Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science and Higher Education
for Women, Coimbatore for Bachelor of Computer Application students.

The purpose of the workshop is

 To Enhance the Creativity and Imagination.


 To develop Teamwork and Group dynamics to Enrich their
Management and problem-solving Skills.
 To deal with Real time applications and visual learning.
Session 1

(08.08.2019)

Mr. Shyam Prashad Rajasekaran, founder and CEO of Twirl tack solutions, get
us to know what the company wants from us and how to be the best
entrepreneur by developing the skills such as innovations and leadership.

He tried to get some ideas from us and taught us ideas using IOT (i.e) of
sensors. After his dazzling speech, Mr. Kishor demonstrated the usage of
Arduino and made us understand of its parts such as general purpose of I/O,
microcontroller and its pin, etc..., He made us to understand how the routine
work such as opening and closing of dustbin and doors are done through
sensors without a manpower. He exposed some of the working model such as
power bank, stepper motor,etc..., He made us visualize the world of IOT in
front of our eyes through our imagination.

Session 2

(13.08.2019)

Full day of working with sensors which was explained in previous session in
the laboratory made us to grab clearly about sensors. The lab session includes
the coding using Arduino software for ultrasonic sensor, vibration sensor,
touch sensor, pin sensor, etc...,
SHORT CUTS IN APTITUDE TRICKS

DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS

14.08.2019

The training on “Shortcuts in Aptitude Tricks” was conducted by the


Department of Physics, Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science and Higher
Education for Women on August 14, 2019. The resource person for the aptitude
training was Ms. Sudha. M, the Executive Director, RaMax Academy,
Gandhigramam, Karur. The session was presided by Dr. N.S.Rajeswari, Head i/c,
Department of Physics. The training was initiated with some key points for
preparing competitive exams. She gave a clear explanation about various topics.
She also explained the short cuts in different topics.

The topics discussed in the training were time and work, pipes and systems, square
roots and cube roots, L.C.M Compound Interest etc.,

CONCLUSION:

This training enriched the knowledge of our students. Certainly it promoted the
better path of knowledge to appear for the competitive examinations. Students were
highly motivated and benefitted. The session was very informative. The enormous
information gained by the students from this workshop motivated to prepare for
competitive exams.
Recent Advancements in Machine Learning

Department of Computer Science

Friday 16th August, 2019

On 16st August 2019 a special lecture was organized for the post graduate
students on the topic “Recent Advancements in Machine Learning”, were the
lecture was delivered by Dr. P. Shanmugavadivu, Professor and Head, Department
of Computer Science & Applications, Director IQAC, from The Gandhigram Rural
Institute, Gandhigram, Dindigul.

“Machine learning is a field of study that gives computers the ability to


learn without being explicitly programmed [Arthur Samuel, 1959]. A computer
program is said to learn from experience E from some task T and some performance
measure P. If its P on T improves with experience E [Tom Mitchell, 1997]“.
She explained the importance of machine learning and artificial
intelligence which redefines the computing and also it is one of the fastest growing
technologies. AI finds places in interdisciplinary research. Machine learning is easy
to use in finding the problems in different manners which includes identification of
disease, sentimental analysis etc…The machine learning is used with problem
where there is no deterministic algorithms and problem which don’t have any fixed
solutions, SPAM E-mails, financial fraud, IT security framework. Machine learning
is similar to black box testing in software engineering it is mainly used in data
analytics for predictive analysis, descriptive analysis, and prescriptive analysis
techniques.

She also explained how to develop a module using machine learning mechanism
and the steps involved in machine learning are as follows,

She further continued the session with where we want to apply the machine learning
effectively, it involves,


Computer Vision – image classification , object detection

Speech & Audio – Voice recognition, language translation

recognition, medical services, and bio informatics.
Finally, she ended up the session with giving more ideas for the research
scholars to do their research in machine learning by using the readymade software’s
of ML , and added that the researchers want to create an intermediate modules to
carry over the research works based on novelty, originality and creativity.

Overall, the session was very useful for the students to gain more
knowledge about the machine learning process and recent advancements in machine
learning. It will be very helpful for doing their projects innovatively.
TWO DAYS WORKSHOP ON ANDROID APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT

Ist Day (10.09.2019)

The Department of Information Technology organized a one-day workshop


on Android for IInd PG Students of our Department. The session commenced by
insisting about the importance and the need for Android Developers. The Android
Application Development Workshop provided technical training to students on the
concepts and programming methodologies needed to develop applications for
mobile devices. Students were taught about the usage of different android libraries.
Instruction is aided with live projects which allowed students to grasp concepts of
the complete mobile application development life-cycle.

As an initial work, the students were made to develop and execute a database
program which was designed to fetch the contents from the user and authenticate
them to login into the application. Followed by the successful execution of database
program, the technical guide demonstrated the students with the steps to develop an
application that uses the concept of services and background threads. The concept
under background threads which the students worked on was a splash program.

IInd Day (12.09.2019)

The second day of workshop started with the Introduction to Android SDK
and its setup followed by the development of map based android applications.
Hands-on training was given to build android application framework, designing user
interfaces and so on. The students were directed to develop an android application
to fetch the latitude and longitude address of the current location. Followed by the
of map application execution, the students were taught about Java Script Object
Notation (JSON) and the request and response service working in cloud platform.

WORKSHOP ON LINUX SHELL-SCRIPTING

DESCRIPTION

The workshop commenced with the Introduction to Linux Operating


System, basic commands in Linux and its importance. The workshop dealt with
the topics such as how-to login into the Linux operating system in normal user
level. We learnt about the brief history and the present need for this operating
system. We learnt how to open, handle and manipulate a file. The concept of
creating backup files helped us to retrieve the deleted files. Basic Linux
commands were taught and more than 100 commands were implemented.
Keyboard shortcuts for various operations are learnt. This workshop also gave
knowledge about handling files, manipulation of files and directories.

In the afternoon session, we got a brief explanation about the


program concepts of our academic syllabus. We were taught about scripting the
sequence of operations on one set of data, into a procedure that can be applied
in any similar set of data. Typical operations performed by shell scripts include
file manipulation, Arithmetic calculations and printing texts and the desired
output was obtained. It was interesting to learn about creating additional user
for accessing the file. We were also provided with some websites for easy
reference of advanced Linux commands.

Holistic Personality Development for Future IT Professionals

16th & 17th September, 2019

On 16th & 17th September, 2019 a guest lecture which includes two
session was organized for all the PG students of the Department of Computer
Science on the topic “ Holistic Personality Development for Future IT
Professionals” conducted by Mr.R.Santosh, Lead-People Network and
Relationship and Ms.Sadhana, Holistic Development Centre, Coimbatore.

The session started with the small introduction about the cause of
holistic personality development and how it is more important for everyone to
analyze their own individual skills, quality, ability and traits towards their life
skills & career goals. They explained about the following values related to
human life skills as follows,

Humans are, bio magnetic entities emitting frequencies and vibrate


according to the thought waves. It involves the following intelligence
perspectives,

Body – Physical Quotient(PQ)


Mind – Intelligent Quotient(IQ)
Heart – Emotional Quotient(EQ)
Soul/Spirit – Spiritual Quotient(SQ)
Other important aspects of intelligence it includes social and mental
ability which provides the human life values which improves the goal setting
quality. They also explained about the body functioning and intelligence of
brain in aspects of scientific with spiritual way of thinking.
Forms were distributed to students which contains certain type of self
analysis questions which is to be filled by all the students of their own unique
interest and thinking. Some of the questions like interest, short term goal, long
term goal, hobbies, social works, the person who is more important in your life,
order your top 10 goals according to your aspects, job position, salary
expectations, Date of birth, Birth time with signs, most memorable incident in
your life, etc…

After that they split the students into teams and they were given a group
activity for each member in a group to evaluate the individual & team
performance according to their skills set. Each team has given a team name,
team leader, team assistant leader, team colour, and their associate team
members were allocated. Each team activity topics includes,

Emerging trends – For Eg., 3D printing, cloud computing…


Tech startup – For Eg., Prop tech
Country IT Policy – For Eg., Australia
IT Company Case Study – For Eg., IBM (SWOT Analysis)
For each topic the team members had to prepare the PPT’s for
presentation, and chart work related to each of the given topic. Finally the team
should present their presentations and their chart work explanation in a brief,
each member in a team want to present their own ability and skills towards them
to analyze each individual quality and the team coordination for team evaluation
has to be done to improve the personality development of each and every
students.

They also pointed out some of the pros and cons of each and everyone’s
skills during their presentations which will help them to improve their career
and personality development for future trends and to survive in a current
technological era.
They gave lots of ideas to students those who prefer for government
jobs, private jobs, teaching jobs, self employment and how to improve the
entrepreneurship development for their future career goals.

They also conducted individual counselling for all the students to


analyze them individually and suggest them which will be right job for future
and which will suit them the most based on their ambition, skills, strengths,
weakness, and birth date with signs.

Overall, the two days workshop will be helpful for all the students to

Ist Day (18.09.2019)

The objective of the workshop was to give the students exposure to the
area of Big Data Analytics and opportunity to present their projects. The
workshop commenced with the interaction with the students explaining about
the importance and evolution of big data. He also insisted upon the ways to
analyse and systematically extract information.

The students were instructed to work on Hue, a web-based interactive


query editor which was used to work with sample data. The students were asked
to work in hive and impala languages. Basic queries on data and queries used
for data analysis were made to execute by the students.
IInd Day (19.09.2019)

The workshop continued with the information about Map Reduce and its
capability to process huge data. The workshop also dealt with the usefulness for
performing large scale data analysis. The resource person also described about
how Map Reduce when coupled with Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS)
can be used to handle big data. The session also extended about Hive and the
means of processing structured and semi structured data using the data
warehouse tool. Some examples such as word count using Map Reduce and
CSV file import from internet followed by visualization techniques used in hive
were discussed in the final session.

Mobile Phone Servicing

PROGRAM : The Inauguration of Two days workshop on ‘Mobile Phone

Servicing’

REPORT

The Mobile Phone Servicing Workshop is a skill development programme offered


for the benefit of students.

The Inauguration of Workshop began at 10.00 am on 23-09-2019. All the staff


members and students were gathered for the program. The Inaugural function
started with the blessings of almighty and the prayer song was sung by
Ms.Sowbarnika and Ms.Swathisree. Ms.Ramitha Karan greeted the gathering with
a welcome address.

Then, Dr.K.Udhaya Chandrika, The Dean, School of Physical Sciences and


Computational Sciences, gave an introduction about the mobile workshop and she
also briefed the evolution of mobile phoned over the years.
Followed by the Presidential address, Dr.N.S.Rajeswari, The Head, Department of
Physics, inaugurated the workshop and also encouraged the students to setup an
mobile servicing center within the university campus.

Mr.B.Krishnakumar, Managing Director, New Technology Mobile Servicing and


Training Institute, specially addressed the gathering about the workshop and their
institution. Followed by this, one of the team members, Mr.Velumani, Mobile
servicing technician, continued the session with a seminar and it was very
informative.

The students were separated into three batches and were monitored by the trainers
– Mr.Velumani, Mr.Sajith and Mr.Rajesh.

The afternoon session began around 1.30 pm. Initially, the Trainer introduced
about the active and passive components of a mobile phone. The active
components are diode and transistor and passive components are resistors,
inductors and conductors. Then, the Trainer explained about the usage of
multimeter and the method for checking the range of positive, negative and
temperature terminal of the battery connecting pin in mobile phones.

Each and every student was given individual mother board of mobile phones and
they were made to identify the components. The session was more into theoretical
with less practical examination. The session ended by 4.30 pm.

On 24th September, The Students were asked to assemble by 9.30 am. The trainer
taught about the removal of shorted components in the short board. With the help
of soldering rod and flux, one can remove the shorted components and reassemble
the mobile phone.
In this session, the Students were given different models of mobiles and were
asked to dismantle, rearrange and to solder all the components. It was more
practical and useful as more number of mobile phones were given and every
individual was able to identify the parts.

A demonstration on removing the display using blower machine was shown to the
students. In the machine, air and heat are introduced together on the display. Air
should be of the range 3-4 ppm and heat range should be around 250-550 joules.
With the blower machine, display can be removed easily. The Students were also
given a chance to work with the blower machine. The practical session came to an
end with satisfaction.

Finally, the students had an overall presentation about the workshop and the
software technology used in mobile phone service. Few students came forward to
give their feedback about the session. The Workshop was useful and it also
provided a great opportunity for the students to enhance their skills.

DESCRIPTION:

Day 1: 31-09-2019

The Workshop commenced with the Introduction to PHP at 9.30 a.m. in IT


Lab. The Workshop dealt with the basic ideas of PHP and MySQL, PHP syntax,
connecting frontend with backend, scope of creating websites and so on. Hands-
on practical session on creating database, student’s registration forms were given
to students. We also learnt about basic HTML, PHP programming, Database
fundamentals, MySQL database connectivity, variables, string, and operators in
PHP, and Setting up a test bed, echoing html output to the browser, transferring
information between the PHP pages.

Day 2: 01-10-2019

The second day of workshop pursued with working on various SQL queries
like Update, Insert, Delete and View. Later, Individuals projects based on PHP
and MySQL were discussed. Finally, the students were trained to design forms
using PHP and connect frontend with MySQL database. The entire session was
very informative and interactive. We gained knowledge to interact and
communicate with database using PHP. At the end of the workshop we were able
to design and develop GUI driven web applications. We were also trained to
develop client applications that run on MySQL Database.

REPORT

Economics Association and Planning Forum was conducted one Day


Workshop on “Statistical Tools and its Applications”. In this workshop Head of
the Department, Dr. M.Manonmani our Economics Association Teacher in-
charge Dr.C.Parvathi and all Staff members and PG Students and Research
Scholars, Department of Economics are participated in the workshop. The day
started at 10.30 a.m. with a divine prayer song given by Hannah Glory, from II
BA Economics, it was then followed by a welcome address was given by
K.Deepika, from I MA Economics. Our beloved HOD and Prof.
Dr.M.Manonmani delivered the Presidential Address. She gave a brief
introduction about Chief Guest in an enriching manner. We had two sessions in
forenoon and afternoon.

The Resource person Dr.K.Ramasamy started the sessions at 10.45 am.


The Forenoon session was very interactive and about the theoretical part of the
statistical tools used in research. It includes the type of data, how to frame
hypothesis, type of distribution of data, how to use SPSS for research and types
of test (i.e., Parametric and non-parametric test) for research. After a short break
at 11.45 he explained about parametric and non-parametric test in theoretical
form. The lunch break was at 12.45 p.m. To 1.30 p.m. after this, afternoon
session was started it was fully hands on training. He was explained and how to
use SPSS and how to interpret for table in research in a simple manner. And
also he teaches us how to frame a questionnaire and what analysis is fit for that.
Finally he explained manually all the types of parametric and nonparametric
tests. This section was very helpful in knowing the basics of SPSS. The one day
workshop was ended with the vote of thanks given by G.D.Jasper Jemima, Ph.D
Research Scholar.
Totally 25 students were participated in this workshop, PG and Research
Scholars from Department of Economics. They all were very attentive and
finally, they had Understanding about statistical tools and it will applied in their
research.

Women Cyber Security

Department of Computer Science

On October 1st 2019 the Department of Computer Science has organized


the meeting on the topic “Women Cyber Security” where Mr.V.M.Prabhakaran,
KIT, Coimbatore delivered the lecture. He started with the word “cyber” and
spoke that Cyber has a gender problem.

He explained about the various types of cyber threats that we are exposed
in day to day life .He also shared some vulnerable mobile applications that
shares the user information. The 20 percent figure is still way too low, and our
industry needs to continue pushing for more women in cyber security. But
heightened awareness on the topic led by numerous women in cyber
associations and initiatives has helped move the needle in a positive direction.

He gave a real time demonstration of hacking the mobile phone without


the consent of the user. He also highlighted upon ethical hacking and its
necessity. He also shared a real time incident and gave tips and tricks to handle
the panic situation. He said it is necessary to educate the girls about the usage of
mobile phones.

He added that across the globe there are more than a billion women but,
only few of them are in the technical field so, he said that we the students next
technocrats of the generation should be ready to face the challenges.

Finally he ended with quote “I believe in being strong when everything


seems to be going wrong. I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls. I
believe that tomorrow is another day, and I believe in miracles.” And he wished
that the miracles should come from us. Final year BCA A & B section
attended the session.
One day Workshop on Time Series Analysis

1.11.2019

Department of Economics

In the inaugural function, Dr. M. Manonmani welcomed the gathering. Dr.K.


Shobha, Associate Professor, Department of Economics, Government Arts
College, Coimbatore highlighted the following aspects in the workshop; what is
time series analysis, non stationary of variables in the time series data, co-
integration analysis, error correction model, ARIMA models. Hands on training
was given to the students to perform unit root test, trace test, value test, co
integration test and error correction model. Interpretation of the above models was
also taught. Gist on structural equation model was presented.

It was six days workshop conducted by the ICT Academy by Ms. Mousaumi
Madam. The workshop consisted around 51 students from B.Sc., Computer
Science and BCA.
Both 2nd and 3rd
year students
participated and
completed the
workshop
successfully. We
were given training
continuously from
morning 9:30 AM till evening 4:30 PM. Trailhead is a series of online tutorials that
coach beginners and intermediate developers who need to learn how to code for the
salesforce platform. Lessons are presented in a specific sequence, so customers
have a predefined path to follow and a “guided, curated” experience, according to
salesforce.
Day-1

We were given training how to work on the salesforce platform and how to apply
different methods. On the first day we were taught how to create user login and
system administrators. Also we were asked to complete the modules to unlock the
badges. There were totally 7 badges and after which 3 super badges will be
unlocked to work with.

Day-2

On the second day we completed all the 7 badges and unlocked the three super
badges. Mam taught us how to unlock the badges using her guide and also by
practical sessions. We learnt a lot about the salesforce platform and also how to
create different users and assign duties to them.
Day-3

We were trained enough to unlock the super badges and we were given bonus
points for every challenge that we compete. Mam gave us many notes and guides
and we were asked to complete one super badge a day. The challenge was quite
easy and mam helped us when we were stuck with errors.

Day-4

On the fourth day we completed the next super badge and we learnt both the
basics and depth of salesforce platform an how to use it. We learnt a lot of topics
under the salesforce and gained more knowledge.

Day-5

On the last day almost everybody competed the three Super badges and we were
appreciated by the trainer. The topics that we covered under this training are:

The workshop was very useful and helped us to gain a lot of knowledge about the
trailhead salesforce.

Department of Physics has organized “Two Days Lecture Workshop on
Complex Variables and Tensors for Physicists” on 12.12.2019 and 13.12.2019
in R.No.129 (Science Block). The workshop was split up into 8 sessions (4 sessions
per day) from 9.45am -5.15 pm.

The Workshop was inaugurated and presided by our Dean of School of


Physical Sciences and Computational Sciences, Dr. (Mrs). K. Udaya Chandrika.
On the first day workshop (12.12.2019), the lecture was given by the Eminent
Resource Person, Dr. S. S. Naina Mohammad, Assistant Professor of Physics
from Government Arts College, Udumalpet.

Dr. S. S. Naina Mohammed, started the session interestingly by giving the


introduction about Tensors, which was highly interactive. In the first 3 sessions, he
taught topics like Kronecker and Levi-civita functions, Rank, Symmetric, Anti-
symmetric matrices and the 4th session was completely focused on tensor related
problems and he suggested some reference books for CSIR- NET Examination.

On the second day of workshop (13.12.2019), the lecture was given by the
Resource Person, Dr. Basherrudin Mahmud Ahmed, Assistant Professor of
Theoretical Physics from Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai. He handled the
sessions about Complex numbers in an interesting way. In the first 2 sessions, he
taught topics like Cauchy Reimann conditions, Vectors, Residue theorem. In the 3 rd
session, guidance for competitive exams, CSIR/NET preparations were given. He
also solved some problems [CSIR – NET] to give hope and taught how to approach
the problems. Further he discussed and cleared student’s doubts.

This workshop was very much informative and enriched the knowledge of
on Tensors and Complex variables. Students were highly motivated and this was an
eye- opener session, which wiped out fears over CSIR- NET exams.

Workshop on “PYTHON

DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE

8th-11th January, 2020

The Department of Computer Science organized a workshop on Python for


final year BCA ‘A’ & ‘B’ students on 8th-10th January, 2020. A total of 87 students
participated in the workshop. For BCA ‘A’ the workshop was scheduled from 8 th-
9th January, 2020 and for BCA ‘B’ from 10th -11th January, 2020. The resource
person was Mr.Akil from Accent Technologies.

On 8th (III BCA ‘A’) and 10th (III BCA ‘B’) forenoon session, the resource
person covered the topics on Syntax, Commands, Variables, Data Types, Numbers
and Casting. The students worked on these commands using the Hacker Rank
coding environment editor.

On 8th (III BCA ‘A’) and 10 th


(III BCA ‘B’) afternoon session, he taught on
String, Boolean, Operator, List, If Else and For Loop. The students worked on all
the above topics using the Hacker Rank editor.

On 9th (III BCA ‘A’) and 11th (III BCA ‘B’) forenoon session, the resource
person taught on Functions, Arrays, Class and Inheritance. The students worked on
all these topics.

On 9th (III BCA ‘A’) and 11th (III BCA ‘B’) afternoon session, resource person
covered the topics on Try Catch, Pip, User Input, String Formatting.
The students did programs on prime numbers, vowel, odd or even, factorial,
swapping of numbers, ascending and descending order based on the concepts the
trainer taught.

Agile Methodology

Friday10th January, 2020

The Department of Computer Science has organized an association


meeting on the topic “Agile Methodology” on 10th January 2020. Our speaker
Mr.Satheesh Kumar Pachiappan, Enterprise Application Manager, National
Hearing Care, Melbourne, Australia started the session with the objective of
agile technology.

He highlighted us about the agile methodology of the project


management that is represented by splitting of task into shorter segment of work
with frequent reviews and adaption of plans.

He also clearly explained the waterfall model in which the progress flows
majorly in one direction downwards through the phases of requirement
gathering, analysis, development, testing, deployment and maintenance. He then
presented about sprint technology which is mainly used in scrum Agile
methodology , followed by that he shared some idea about career building. He
also explained agile methodology with a case study and gave real time
examples.

DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE

Friday10th January, 2020

On 10th January 2020 an association meeting on the topic “Cloud


Infrastructure” was organized for all the final year students of the Department of
Computer Science where Mrs.Thanga Aruna, Solution Lead, Australia Post,
Australia delivered the lecture. Dr.G.Padmavathi, Professor, Department of
Computer Science presided the meeting and gave introduction to Cloud
infrastructure.

The session was started with the small introduction about their education
and career experience in the Information technology field. She had 15 years of
experience in the IT domain and she shared about her knowledge in the IT field
and cloud storage.

She mentioned the most upcoming and demanding technologies which is
going to rule the future world with the students. She also explained about those
technologies playing important role to get career opportunities in those field.
She insisted with the needs and expectations of a company and communication
and soft skills requirement in the job market. She explained about two important
technologies which are as follows,

AWS cloud
She clearly explained the most prominent steps/framework to attain the
job or to be hired by the company with the real time examples in a more
effective way.

She gave a brief introduction on cloud storage on how it was one of the first to
be all web-based, and referenced in their commercials as we can think of our
electronic meeting place as the cloud.

Amazon Web Services introduced their cloud storage service AWS S3 in 2006,
and has gained widespread recognition and adoption as the storage supplier to
popular services such as SmugMug, Dropbox, and Pinterest. It also enabled
online file sharing and personal cloud content management service for
businesses and was explained in detail in AWS.

She explained us about Amazon Web Services (AWS) which was started to
offer IT services to the market in the form of web services, which is nowadays
known as cloud computing. With this cloud, we need not plan for servers and
other IT infrastructure which takes up much of time in advance. Instead, these
services can instantly spin up hundreds or thousands of servers in minutes and
deliver results faster. We pay only for what we use with no up-front expenses
and no long-term commitments, which makes AWS cost efficient.
She highlighted that AWS provides a highly reliable, scalable, low-
cost infrastructure platform in the cloud that powers multitude of businesses in
190 countries around the world.

She interacted with the students and shared her knowledge about the
cloud computing and AWS of Amazon particularly and the session was really
enlighten on cloud infrastructure.

THREE DAY FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME ON

“Introduction to Big Data Analytics”

The Department of Computer Science, organized a FDP on “Introduction to Big


Data Analytics” from 22nd to 24th January 2020 in association with ICT Academy.

Objective of the FDP

The main objective of the Faculty Development Programme is to make the faculty
members of various institutions in and around Coimbatore to gain knowledge about the
basics of Big Data Analytics and to get hands on the tools used for Analytics.

Participants

A total of 32 participants, which includes 17 faculty members from various


institutions like NGP Arts and Science Kongu Arts and Science, Karunya Institute of
Technology, Nehru Arts and Science College, PSGR Krishnammal College, VLB
Janakiammal College, Dr. R.V. Arts and Science College, Sri GVG Visalakshi College,
Sri Ramakrishna College of Arts and Science, etc., and 15 faculty members from the
host institution of various departments like Computer Science, Education, Biochemistry,
Tourism, Information Technology attended the FDP.

Inauguration

The Inauguration of the programme started at around 10:30 am on 22nd January


2020.The Inuagural Session commenced with the presence of Head of the department
Dr. Vasantha Kalyani David, Convenor Dr.V.Radha and Organizing Secretary
Dr.N.Valliammal, Mr. A. Lakshmikanth, Relationship Manager- Education Initiatives
and Mr. Hari Prasad Trainer, ICT Academy. The inauguration started with a prayer song
by Ms. Harini of the Department of Music. The Master of Ceremony was done by Mrs.
V. Rachel. Followed by the prayer song, the welcome address was done by Mrs. V.
Rachel. Dr. Vasantha Kalyani David, Professor & Head, Department of Computer
Science greeted the audience. This was followed by the greeting by Mr. A.
Lakshmikanth, Relationship Manager-Education Initiatives, ICT Academy. Dr. G.
Sudhamathy, introduced the resource person Mr. Hari Prasad. The inauguration ended
with a welcome note to the speaker of the day.

TECHNICAL SESSIONS

Session-I

Technical Session-I started at around 11:00 am and Mr. Hari Prasad, the
resource person for the three day programme started explaining about the basics of Big
Data. He gave a wide knowledge base focusing on What is Big Data? What makes Data
Big? Who Produces Data? Why Big Data Analytics? Characteristics of Big Data,
Analytics and Applications, Data Sources for Big Data and Life Cycle Phases of Big
Data. He also gave several real time examples that would help the faculty members to
impart the knowledge to their students. Technical Session-I ended at around 1:00 pm
after which the participants were taken for lunch.

Session -II

During the post lunch, Technical Session-II took place in which the resource
person gave hands on session on the basics of R Programming. In this session he
covered the basic data types, operations, built in functions and class labels. This gave a
very good knowledge for the participants who are new to the subject. The resource
person was meticulous and he took the participants in a step by step manner. By this the
session got over for the day at around 4:30 pm.
Session-III

On the second day of the FDP, the 23rd January 2020, the Technical Session-III
started at around 10:00 am and the participants were eager to get more hands on R
Programming and how to do Data Analytics using the same. In this session, the resource
person covered matrices, matrices operations, factors, factor operations and user defined
functions. Technical Session-III ended at around 1:00 pm after which the participants
were taken for lunch.

Session-IV

During the second day post lunch, the Technical Session- IV started. In this session the
resource person briefed about the inbuilt datasets available in R and how to perform the
various operations on those data sets. He dealt with one or two datasets and how to
arrive at information from the data. He performed several inbuilt function on those data
to make them a meaningful knowledge. This helped the participants to understand the
usage of these datasets for their data analysis projects. This the session ended for the day
at around 4:30 pm.

Session-V

On the third day of the FDP, the 24th January 2020, the Technical Session-V
started at around 10:00 am and the participants were eager to know more on R
Programming and its applications. In this session the resource person covered on how to
import a data file from outside source into the R Tool. He also performed several useful
functions on these imported data and he showed how to create different types of graphs
from these data. By seeing the graphical display of the data one can easily interpret the
data and infer the results. He also, taught the participants how to connect to outside
database and access the data. He also, performed several SQL queries on the database
and displayed the results. The participants really got useful knowledge that will help
them to train their students in this field. Technical Session-V ended at around 1:00 pm
after which the participants were taken for a group photo and then proceeded for lunch.

Session-VI

During the third day post lunch, the Technical Session-VI started. In this session,
the resource person took the participants on a glance to the various data mining and
machine learning algorithms that would help to perform data analytics. He first
explained about those algorithms and then made the participants to have hands on in the
R Tool. He first built a regression model and explained how to fit the test data in the
model and predict the results. He also, helped the participants to install new packages
using internet and make the functions in those packages available. He then explored the
naive bayes classification algorithm and highlighted on the Predictive Analytic concepts
using the code in R Tool. All these tools gave an eye-opening for the team of
participants from various institutions to gain tremendous knowledge based on the
organized topic “Introduction to Big Data Analytics”.

DST-CURIE Sponsored Workshop on “X-Ray Crystallography 11th February 2020

The Department of Physics, School of Physical Sciences and Computational


Sciences organized a One-day workshop on “X-Ray Crystallography” under DST
CURIE Phase ll activities for the year 2019-20. The workshop was sponsored by
the Department of Science and Technology (DST).

Objective of the workshop

In this era of miniaturization, the science and technology of materials acquires


paramount importance. Driven by the unique yet multifaceted functionalities and
brilliant characteristics exhibited by materials, analysis of structure of materials and
elucidation of structure – property relations of materials has gone far and wide and
expected to scale much greater heights in future. At this juncture it is essential to
understand significance of X-ray crystallography in material characterization. To shed
some light on the theme, the DST-CURIE Sponsored Workshop on “X-ray
Crystallography” was organised.

Participants

Academicians, M.Phil./Ph.D. Scholars, Postgraduate students from the


departments of Physics, Chemistry, Biochemistry/Biotechnology/Bioinformatics,
Zoology, Food Science and Nutrition and Textiles and Clothing of the host institute and
Academicians, M.Phil./Ph.D. Scholars from other academic institutes from Tamilnadu
participated. Total number of registered participants was 130. There is no registration
fee for participants from host institution. Rs.150 is the registration fee for participants
from other institutions.

The workshop had four technical sessions. Prof.C.Sanjeeviraja,Emeritus


Professor,Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering Alagappa
Chettiar Government College of Engineering and Technology enlightened the gathering
on “Crystallography and Powder X-Ray Diffraction”. A detailed session on
crystallography was given followed by the relationship between crystallography and X-
ray diffraction by crystals.

Dr.K.Jeyadheepan from the School of Electrical & Electronics Engineering SASTRA


Deemed University outlined the specifications related to samples and instrumentation
for obtaining good diffraction data. A demonstration on X-ray diffraction data reduction
using open source software was carried out.

The third session of the workshop was handled by Dr. Prathapa Siriyara Jagannatha
from Bruker India Scientific Ltd. The latest developments in the instrumentation for
single crystal XRD was presented during the session. Elucidation of crystal structure
using licensed software product from Bruker has been demonstrated.

The session on “X-Ray Crystallographic Strategies for Protein Structure Determination -


Key for Efficient Drug Design” was delivered by Dr.K.Gunasekaran from the University
of Madras. The importance of X-ray crystallography in protein characterization was
outlined and the recent trends in Protein structure determination using XRD was
discussed.

An interactive session with the experts was organized and opportunity was given to
participants to raise their specific clarification in using XRD.

Day 1: 13th February, 2020

The Workshop commenced with the Introduction to Intelligence and


Intelligence at 9.30 a.m. in IT Lab. The Workshop dealt with the basic ideas of
Artificial Intelligence and their languages, types, reactive machines and also
about Machine learning and their types. Applications of machine learning,
such as to robotic control, data mining, autonomous navigation,
bioinformatics and Medical/health care application, working
application of machine learning, machine learning in real world, artificial life,
issues in machine learning. They also give information about humanoid
robots named Sophia. Hands-on practical sessions in creating chatbots in
Dialog flow website are developed.
Day 2: 14th February, 2020

On the second day the concepts of the previous day were brushed up. After that
basic concepts and applications of neural networks were taught. And also
continued with the languages used for AI, Machine Learning types, algorithms
and their components. Hands-on practical session on creating application in
MIT app inventor. Later, Individuals projects based on creating application and
self-developing individual like entrepreneurs were discussed.

Finally, the workshop ended with feedback session.

Day 1: 17th February, 2020

The Workshop commenced with the Introduction to PHP at 9.30 a.m. in IT Lab.
The Workshop dealt with the basic ideas of PHP & MySQL, how to connect
frontend with backend, scope of creating websites and so on. The Session gave full
hands-on in PHP and its website development. Hands-on practical session in
creating database, student registration form, student login, employee registration
form and employee login. The session was very informative and interactive.

Day 2: 18th February, 2020


The second day was continued with the PHP and the database connectivity using
MySQL. Hands-on practical session on SQL queries .Editing records and
performing queries like inserting records, editing and deleting records, performing
queries, retrieving specific columns, filtering records with a where clause, using
operators, sorting records and eliminating duplicates. Later, Individuals projects
based on creating web site using PHP & MySQL were discussed. The students also
had all their queries solved and doubts cleared by Ms. E. Karthika. Finally, the
workshop ended with feedback session.

The Workshop commenced with the Introduction to Python at 9.30 a.m. in IT Lab.
The Workshop dealt with the basic ideas of Python and how to code in the
Anaconda navigator. Hands-on practical session about python introduction variable
using variables, understanding data types using operators, writing statements and
comments using conditional statements, if(), else if() and else if condition
statement, creating an array, modifying array elements and processing arrays with
loops.

Day 2: 21st February, 2020

The second day was continued with Python & MySQL. Hands-on practical session
in creating database connectivity using Python & MySQL queries like MySQL
CONNECTIVITY, INSERT, and UPDATE, SELECT, DELETE and VIEW. They
also gave information about Data analytics and Visualization like graphical
representation. Later, Individuals projects based on Python & MySQL were
discussed. The two-day workshop designed for the beginners to understand the
Python Programming & its use with MySQL.

Finally, the workshop ended with feedback session.

Technology. The session was followed by Mr. Rathinaraja jayaraj,
Resource person of the day. He gave the Introduction about Network
security. He instructed that, “Network security is a set of rules and
configurations designed to protect the integrity, confidentiality and
accessibility of computer networks.” His impulsive and inspirational
speech was about network security and training. He insists us that Network
security consists of the policies and practices adopted to prevent and
monitor unauthorized access, misuse, modification, or denial of a computer
network and network-accessible resources. Networks can be private, such
as within a company, and others which might be open to public access.
Network security is the security provided to a network from unauthorized
access and risks. He says that, it is the duty of network administrators to
adopt preventive measures to protect their networks from potential security
threats. He also discussed various types of Network security. He
demonstrated how does a network security works on. He taught us about
the basics of network security so that each and every one can protect their
network. A stable and efficient network security system is essential to
protecting client data. He instructs the importance of network security like,
A good network security system helps business reduce the risk of falling
victim of data theft and sabotage, Network security helps protect your
workstations from harmful spyware etc. He teached us how to achieve a
security and a network Security helps in protecting personal data of clients
existing on network. It facilitates protection of information that is shared
between.

The Inauguration of Association Began with Welcome Address by Dr. D


Shanmugapriya, Head department of Information Technology. Association
Plan for the year 2019-20 was catalogued by Ms. N. Nazrin Banu Student’s
Association Chairperson. Keynote Address by Mr.S. N Ravichandran,
Managing Director, Nilgiris Chemical Stoneware Co.(P) Ltd, Coimbatore. He
delivered a Technical Talk on “Cyber Security Scenario-An assessment”.

His impulsive and inspirational speech was about awareness of securing our
privacy over cyberspace. He Insist on “Risk assessment and creation of
information security” which helps us to recognize and control hazards in our
workplace.
The chief guest gave a technical talk on the topic “Cyber Security Scenario An
assessment” to all UG and PG students and the talk was about 2 hours which
included the “Digital Security is converging with personal and physical
security”. He also admitted about the section 43A of IT ACT and so on.

He said Cyber Security is everyone’s problem, affecting our livelihoods and our
way of life. Every facet of our society is now being targeted at every level. He
Confessed the most factful one we are facing with internet in real life. He
cautioned every individual must be more aware of vulnerabilities over the
Cyber Attack.

However, it’s a boon of using Cyberspace, yet it is also a curse because it


impacts on our privacy issues. “Never stop encourage safety in our workplace”.
