Assignment 2

The assignment requires students to create AutoCAD drawings of a 'Machine Part' using specified layers and dimensions in orthographic views. Students must follow guidelines for drawing setup, including using a title block and ensuring proper scaling. Submissions are due by 12:00 p.m. on October 30, 2023, and must include both DWG and PDF files named according to the student's ID.

Assignment 2: AutoCAD Drawing

Expected Learning Outcomes

• Create engineering drawing by using drawing instruments and engineering-

specific software in CAD for engineering communication and documentation
• Apply CAD application, and modelling and simulation software in simple
engineering problems

Task

Using AutoCAD, draw and dimension the front, top, and right-side orthographic views
of an object named “Machine Part” based on the following instructions.

a) Start from a new file (not an existing file) with a proper drawing template.

b) Set drawing unit to mm and drawing limits to A4 paper size.

c) Create the following layers with the properties listed in the table below.

Layer Name Colour Line Type Line Weight

Visible lines White Continuous 0.50 mm
Construction lines Cyan Continuous 0.25 mm
Centre lines Green Centre 0.25 mm
Hidden lines White Hidden (Dashed) 0.25 mm
Section lines Blue Continuous 0.25 mm
Cutting plane Blue Phantom 0.50 mm
Dimensions Red Continuous 0.25 mm

d) Draw the standard three views using third-angle projection system in model
space with dimensions. Make one view a section to include the important
features.

e) Insert the title block from “A4TitleBlock.dwg” (downloadable from Blackboard)

into paper space and fill in necessary information. Use A01 as drawing number.

f) Plot the standard three views with an appropriate scale.

g) Save your finished AutoCAD drawing file (*.dwg) and generate a pdf file
(*.pdf), where the files are named based on your student ID. For example, the
file names are “12345678A.dwg” and “12345678A.pdf” if your student ID is
12345678A.

h) Upload both “12345678A.dwg” and “12345678A.pdf” onto Centralised

Blackboard for submission on or before 12:00 p.m. (noon), 30 October 2023
(Mon).

Machine Part

Front

Note

1. It is a symmetrical part.
2. There is an annular hole in the cylindrical part at the centre.
3. Indicated height of the cylindrical part is 5Y mm, where Y = last digit of your
student number. For example, it is 58 mm if your student ID is 12345678A.

Reminder

• NO redundant dimension should be drawn in the drawing.

• NO duplicate of line should be drawn in the drawing.
• Dimension line should NOT overlap with the object.
• Place your A4 title block and projection symbol in the visible layer.
