VARIETIES AND REGISTERS OF SPOKEN AND WRITTEN LANGUAGE

The concept of language variation is introduced through examining the different features of everyday
registers and academic registers with examples from everyday life and academic context.
Language registers

How speech is used appropriately according to the situation and with who you speak to.
The variety of a language used in a particular social setting, using certain words, phrases and contractions that
are normally used in another settings.

In sociolinguistics, language variety (also called lect) is a general term for any distinctive form of
language or linguistic expression. Language variety (or simply variety) is commonly used to refer to any of the
overlapping subcategories of a language including dialect, register, jargon, and idiolect. To understand the
meaning of language varieties, it is important to consider how lects differ from Standard English.
Dialect

The word “dialect” which contains lect within the term is derived from the Greek words ‘Dia’ meaning
‘across, between’ and legein meaning speak’. A dialect is regional or social variety of language distinguished by
pronunciation, grammar, and /or vocabulary
Register

Is defined as the way a speaker used language differently in different circumstances. Observe how you
speak with your friend and compare it with the way. you speak before an audience or during a job interview.
Registers are determined by factors such as social occasions, context, purpose, and audience. Registers are used
in all forms of communication, be it written or spoken.
Jargon

Jargon pertains to specialized language of a professional or occupational group. This language is often
meaningless to outsiders. In other words , jargon is a sort of dialect that only those on this inside group can
understand. It has social implications similar to a dialect prejudice but in reverse.

Regional dialect
a variety spoken a particular region. These include Ilocano in the ilocos region, chavacano in
Zamboanga, Waray certain part of Visayas Region.

Sociolect
also known as a social dialect, a variety of language (or register) used by a socioeconomic class, a
profession, an age groups or any other social group.
Ethnolect
a lect spoken by a specific ethnic group.
Idiolect
the language or languages spoken by each individual.
